The stock bars suck. I repeat - the stock bars SUCK!
Lots of handlebar threads on here, and lots of choices. I run the Wild One Chubbys 575 bars, as many on here do. The advantage of the 575 bars is that you probably do not need to go to longer brake/clutch lines. They move your hands about 2" back, 2" out, and about a inch or so higher than the stock bars. Wild One also now makes the 578 bars now that are a bit higher than the 575 bars. I was on a bike yesterday with those, and they look and feel great. The 1 1/4" diameter of the Wild One bars makes them look a lot more meaty, too - and the chrome on them is flawless.
There are also the Yaffe apes in various heights, and other manufacturers as well. ANYTHING is better than the stock bars.
Changing bars is a quite tedious process, mostly involving removing the pins from the connectors for the internal wiring, fishing the wires through the new bars, and reinserting the pins in the connectors. Most dealers will charge 8 hours of expensive labor for this job, far exceeding the cost of the bars themselves.
You can do the job yourself though, if you have lots of patience and are mechanically inclined a bit. Many of us on here have travelled this road... It's not fun, but better bars will make your riding MUCH more enjoyable!
