Rubber vs High Tech riser bushings
« on: June 03, 2013, 05:54:18 PM »

Hi Guys,
What is better the old Harley $2.25 riser bushings or the $40.00 set? My son and I were out riding and his handlebar risers worked loose. Well he overtightened one bolt. We could see red bushing material crumbling from around the washers. The Harley shop in the area we were riding, had the OEM parts for 9 bucks for set of four, but tried his best to sell us a 40 dollar set of a stiffer rubber. We got the OEM. One of the riser mounting bolts come out was  galled.  I asked how much they would charge to tap the one riser half. We already had it off. They wanted $110.50 to tap/clean one riser hole. !@@$%^& that! There was a Autozone 1/2 mile away bought a tap for less than 7 bucks and was back on the road. I am simplay amazed at the amout of greed of Baton Rouge HD Stealership!
I will Never Ever go there but I would not recomemend them to Anybody! Period!

I always run either Alloy art riser bushings or Arlen Ness bushings ness part no. 08-005 (Polyurethane I Believe) just cause I run bars 14"-16" high.  I can't speak for drag bars or stock bars, but if you have bars over 10" high I highly recommend spending the money on the high end risers.  My very first bike that I put 20" apes on and used stock HD risers after 1 yr of riding my bars felt loose, not at the clamp but at the risers.  After removing the bars those HD risers where crushed.  Ever since then when I install new bars I put the high end ones on.  You can't move the bars and they last, especially after hitting pot holes or going over rail road tracks.

If you have low bars maybe someone else has a different opinion.

The original riser bushings were a rubber compound that was relatively soft.  This had the positive effect of reducing the amount of vibration transmitted to the rider through the bars.  The downside was the lost motion you could feel when turning the bars, which translated to less than crisp handling and feedback when pushing the bike pretty hard.  The performance upgrade back in the day was to change the rubber bushings out for harder urethane bushings.  The urethane also had another advantage in that it didn't deteriorate as quickly as rubber.  The downside was that the firmer bushings also allowed more vibration and road shock to transmit to the rider through the bars.  Since the early days I think the urethane bushings have improved in that respect and you have more choices than just a super rigid formulation.

If it were mine, I'd go with the latest urethane bushings.

I installed the H-D urethane riser bushings on both my bikes when I installed the WO575s.  I cannot tell any difference as to vibration - do not detect any.  However the firmness and 'solid' feel of the bars is a tremendous improvement imo.  I wouldn't use anything else.
