To Duel or Not to Duel...That is the question!
« on: June 07, 2013, 12:04:01 AM »

And that is my dilemma? My former RK engine builder gave me all the engineering reasons why back in 2002 if I really wanted to build Tq which translates directly into acceleration, I needed to go to a 2-1 set up and I did with a VH Propipe. Loved the sound and after a brief period, didn't mind the one pipe look on my bagger. Plus, the Dyno proved him out as I had 101hp and 105lbs Tq on a 95ci which I think was pretty impressive.

Fast forward and I have picked up my new CVO Ultra with a 110. I am going to do a mild performance upgrade by exhaust, cam and a new tune.

For the exhaust, I am debating what direction to go. Do I do a 2-1 again and if so, which brand or a 2-1-2 system like Fullsac has. My builder is NOT a fan of true duels so probably not an option unless someone can show me really solid data that they don't loose Tq big time where it counts in the 2500-4000 range.

So any help would be appreciated.

Why not go with a 2-1 and a Ghost Pipe?

Gives you the performance and the looks!

I have about convinced myself that the 2-1-2 X-pipe setup is about the same as a 2-1 plus you get twice the muffle volume capacity which can help.
It also helps maintain the stock look.

The two into one look is great on just about everything except the baggers...JMHO.  Harley tried it on the 2010 Street Glide and only ran it only one year....was not a good seller with the two into one and went back to the two-one-two config in 2011.  This was on the standard Street glide, not the CVO models.
The ghost pipe adds weight and just hangs there but sure evens out the look if you must have the two into one.  A good two-one-two header/muffler combo can still give you the sound you want, the tune you are looking for and that extra pipe is a working part of the exhaust instead of a "hanger-on".  Again, my two cents....not worth much more than that.... :2vrolijk_21:

Not knocking anyone  but I DONT THINK U CAN GO WRONG WITH THE D@D  AND THE GHOST PIPE  it makes sense to run the exhaust straight out the pipe without turning under the frame and turning again to the left muffler... just my opinion ant its just like a as$h@(e everyone has one although i have met a few people with TWO....

Agree with your assessment and the D&D is a very good system.  However if it were me (and it ain't), I would want whatever extra weight was on the bike doing something other than just hangin' there lookin' purdy (like the ghost pipe).  But that's why there are so many different configurations when it comes to pipes/air cleaners/chrome/wheels/tires...etc.

If you were planning to race your Harley this exhaust question might be important.  If you plan to just ride it on the street like 99.9% of Harley owners, it's not a big deal either way.  Do you plan to ride the bike, or do you plan to just hang a dyno chart on the wall and brag to your friends about that pretty chart?

All the various exhaust theory spewed on Harley sites tends to amuse the heck right out of me.  You're dealing with a 1903 engine design with 2 unevenly spaced combustion events, so much of the BS about scavenging goes right out the window.  And a good tuner, as opposed to what you find in most places, can eliminate much if not all of that torque dip everyone mentions when bashing the so-called "true dual" systems.  Btw, ever notice how the Thunderheader 2 into 1 also has that same dip?  How can that possibly be, when the "experts" tell us that's a true dual phenomenon?

My advice is to install what makes you happy and don't worry about what all the "experts" tell you.

'Am very happy with the V&H PowerDuals on the '09 SERG

'Am a big fan of the 2-1-2 pipes, there are many choices out there...

I run the Cobra Powerport duals, its the same pipe as S&S and Khromewerks, full size cross over to the left muffler which pretty much gives the same sound from both mufflers,no torque loss at lower RPM's.
