Flush mount gas cap... issues
« on: June 07, 2013, 01:24:13 AM »

Hi all...

Since quite a few of the CVO models now have flush mount caps, I did not put this in the model specific section.

For about 3 months I kept smelling fuel around the bike when it was parked... either in the shade, in the sun or even in the carport at home.... full or empty didnt matter.

2 fill-ups ago I noted that I had fuel puking out the filler while sitting at a light. OK.. it was pretty full and the bike was hot... but it never happened before, and I fill it the same way every time. On the stand just up to the neck, then up to the next .05 or .10... just to make the numbers even (OCD)

Next fill-up I got right on the highway, and had no issues.

I filled up again today... and had to make a stop within 5 miles..... bike was in the sun with no issues, but when I got back on her to head out, I noted the smell of fuel again.

The on ramp to the highway was a long right hand sweeper, and I noted my leg getting wet... yup.. out the cap again.. once I straightened the bike up it stopped...

I assume this is a warranty issue.. but has anyone else experienced this?

^^^^^^^Same here.  You have to really tighten the cap first.

The cap is tight. I have paws (not hands), and it wont get any tighter. I can feel the cap STOP at its lowest position. The fuel leak is not coming up around the outside of the caps rubber seal... its coming up through the cap... (The plunger area in the center)

Yes, a lot of folks have reported the same issue, and I'm willing to bet a much larger number have the same problem but either don't realize it or don't realize it isn't supposed to be that way.

Harley had an emissions recall last year on the Softail and Dyna models with the flush gas caps, btw.  The gas cap should never actually pass gas or vapor directly, excess pressure should be relieved through the tanks vent system.  The problem could be a defective cap of course, but in the case of the recall the problem was traced to the filler neck in the tank.  The threads for the cap were malformed just enough to add extra resistance when you turn the cap, such that it stops before the gasket makes a complete seal.  Ask your friendly dealer if he still has the tool Harley sent him for that earlier recall, the one used to rework those threads in the tank.  If your cap isn't the problem, then check the filler pipe threads.  Refer them to bulletin M-1328.

Thanks Jerry!

This last time I popped the top on the cap and could see the fuel exiting from between the two parts and not around the threads... but I will have them check the recall anyway.

I really hope its NOT the tank... it was a warranty replacement due to transit damage. There were no previous indication of a problem. I suspect the cap has simply worn out or broke with almost 19K on the scoot. (and I'll blame the E10 fuel too!)

I noted the smell of fuel a while back but it was always very faint... kind of like walking past an old lawn mower... I wonder if I'll get better fuel economy without it evaporating all the time...  :)

This, along with the console inlay paint coming undone from underneath... (maybe I can blame the fuel vapors.. lol)

I have a similar but different problem with my 2011 SESG.  My flush cap suddenly stopped being flush....slightly non-flush even when tightening all the way.  Anyone know answer to this one?

Same observation as SmokeyJoe.  Happened once and freaked me out as I was pulling back on highway from just filling up and bike was smokin hot!

I know if fuel cap is not flush after I fill up, then I did not tighten it enough.

Yup.....but I do not want to be blamed for  :jack:

Last November. just outside St. Louis got caught in the rain. In the morning everything was frozen as the temperature dipped. When I went to fill up the cap popped up as it should. After fill up it would not go down all the way. I realized the the water got in it and froze. Went inside to the mens room and used the hand dryer to melt the ice out.

Not saying yours has ice in it but I suspect there is something in side the cap preventing it to fully come down.
