Tuner advice
« on: June 11, 2013, 06:42:08 PM »

I just ordered the Bassani 2>1 Short Megaphone for my Breakout, and trying to decide on a tuner. Does anyone run the Cobra auto-tuner? If so, how pleased are you? Any advice/info on your tuner experiences would be appreciated. My dealer is suggesting the Harley tuner and a dyno.

I have the same pipes. Went with the SERT and a Dyno. No regrets here.

Find the best dyno guy that you can, even if you need to travel a ways.  Ask him what tuner he is the best with.

Do a site search on the Cobra, it has been discussed fairly extensively before.  IMHO, don't waste your money.

I used the Cobra "auto tuner", and have made several posts about it here, if you want to look them up.  I planned to use it temporarily, then upgrade to a TTS when I was finished with mods.

It mostly works as advertised, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.  The main reason:  Cobra has chitty customer service.

The Cobra PowrPro doesn't auto-adjust anything.  It just crudely adds fuel to the AFR, kind of like using a sledgehammer to apply finishing nails.  If it cost less than $200, it would be an okay alternative, or if it could be fine tuned, maybe I'd recommend it.

I'd get  a TTS, SERT, or PowerVision.  Those are the best options for now.

Good luck

Dan

I don't dyno my bikes so i use an auto tuner on both of them.

I have the Cobra on my V-Rod and my experience is just the opposite from that mentioned on this thread.  When i first installed it, i was experiencing some missing on the motor and called Cobra.  Their level 1 support immediately put me in touch with Phil.  What a fantastic dude.  he explained the system to me in great detail and told me that the Cobra does not tune at idle, but inserts a preset level of fuel.  He explained there was a digital fuel adjustment and I needed to turn the wick up a little for the V-Rod and it worked.  Crude or no, it works great on my bike.  Much more power at all throttle positions than stock and the throttle response is great.  i do agree that it is overpriced for what it does.

I use the Dynojet Powervision on my Breakout.  Fantastic fueler.  I ran the Autotune feature 7 or 8 times, and it improved every time.  I now have a great tune in every gear/rpm range/throttle position.  I can't say enough about Dynojet support.  They are just a fantastic group of folks.

Between the two of them i would definitely pick the Powervision, no question.

A true dyno tune by a reputable tuner would be the best.  There are adjustments every 250 RPM increments....so theoretically, a good tune should take some time.  I had mine dyno tuned and at the 1000 mile service they are going to really dial it in.  BUT....on my last bike, I used the Power Vision with a tune and lifetime tunes from Fuel Moto.  The owner of Fuel Moto helped develop the Power Vision and he is a genius when it comes to tuning a bike.  The tune he gave me for my FLHX was almost 100% perfect.

Cliffs Notes:
The best and probably more expensive is a true dyno tune

The best non dyno is the Power Vision with tunes from Fuel Moto.

+1 on Fuel Moto.  Jamie definitely knows his way around the Powervision.

If you're like me, I like to Tinker with my bike. I just can't leave things alone.  I seem to never be satisfied or I get tired of looking at the same set-up every time I go for a ride.
I'm one of those people that is always trying to improve something, even if it's already the best it can be.

OK....I'm a Nut Case but, I know I'm not alone. Some of you reading this are just like me, especially when it comes to Motorcycles.

So I say,
Anybody that expects to have thier bike Dyno Tuned better make sure you like the way it's set up at the time of the Dyno-Tune.

If by chance you're not sure you like the Sound or Looks of the Exhaust and are thinking CHANGE, or you might want to replace the Air Cleaner for Cosmedic or any other reason later on,  just remember it's going to be Dyno Time all over again.
If you can get Dyno time for free, go for it.

The Moral of this story is Auto Tuners like "Power Vision" -&- "SE Race Tuner" (my personal choice) are great for people like me, Maybe You Too.

I have a power vision for mine (just stock set up with Rush slip-ons), but I knew I would have popping on decel if I didn't do something.  So, I went with the fairly expensive power vision, but it allows me to "tinker" with the auto tune in order to get it just right, or if I switch to a different exhaust set up at some point, no problem with getting a new map an using the auto tune feature to get it just right.  I would not use a piggy back system like the cobra-I had a power commander five and a power commander 3 on past bikes, and they worked just fine, but they are installed there permenantly (power vision is a flash, nothing to install).

I have the same exhaust on mine. I'm using the Power Vision and auto tuning. I've had a few issues but Dynojet has been helpful. I put it on the dyno and they were unable to tune it as they were unfamiliar with the Power vision. The Dyno run showed that the front and rear cylinder were off a bit with the front a little on the rich side.
They didn't charge me for the dyno time or their efforts. it made 92.4 HP and 110.6 TQ. I felt the numbers were in the right range for a basic stock set-up with aftermarket exhaust. it wouldn't take much to get to 100 HP just the right cam. The seat of the pants dyno says WOW this think really runs!!

I've rescheduled a dyno tune with another vendor that is more familiar with the Power Vision and I'm expecting slightly better results bud don't expect much. I don't have hardly any deceleration popping and just the occasional hiccup so overall I'm pleased. I do get ECM codes anytime the Power Vision is plugged in but it does not seem to effect the auto tune process. at times it runs really bad when the PV is plugged in and no one at Dynojet can figure out why. Not a big deal as I disconnect it after the Auto-tune session and re-flash of the ECM. After a good Dyno tune I will have no need to have it connected to the bike. If I get into the engine at some point with cams, etc. I will opt for the Auto-tune module and wide band O2 sensors. as the bassani exhaust has the bungs installed it will be a fairly straight forward install. If taking the exhaust off to get at the rear O2 sensor is straight forward.

I know most others have not had any issues with the Power vision! Just my luck. It is hard to follow just what version of the ECM software Harley loads. I have a Daymaker headlight and do not get any lights on the speedo or dash as others have reported. Who knows why??

Overall I would recommend the Power Vision as the dyno numbers seem good with only the auto-tune process and without the expertise of a good dyno tech and tune.
