Heavy Breather Chrome Cover Question
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:09:50 PM »

For those of you who have one of the chrome heavy breather covers installed how to you get it to butt up flush with the mount.  I know there was some discussion on here awhile back, but I can't seem to find it.  Thanks.

Edit:  found the discussion of this topic and a person or two say to heat up the end of the breather cap with a hairdryer to soften up the glue that holds on the breather cap and then pull it off.  If anyone else wants to add to this idea please do so.  I haven't bought one yet, but am considering it.

EDIT 2:  Tried removing the top cover to the heavy breather and no matter how much prying, wd-40, and heat that thing would not come off.  So, I removed the CVO medallion alone and the cover fit perfectly after tightening the screws on it.  so, you don't have to remove the entire metal cover at the end of the heavy breather.  And I used a bit of heat and fishing line to get the medallion off.

I put the chrome cover on mine. I sprayed WD-40 behind the end-cap let it set for about 30 minutes. added a little heat from a hair dryer and it fell off.

What part number did you buy?  All I know is that there are 2 sizes.  My dealer got one for me, but we couldn't verify if it would fit or not.

I got it used off the forum here- haven't actually gotten it yet, so I hope it fits-I thought there was only one size (a heavy breather is a heavy I thoght)- now I am curious so I will look it up on HD's site.  The seller did state that it was compatible with the Breakout, I hope so.

Looks like the part number is 28740-10, which says that it doesn't fit with the decorative medallion (knew that i would have to remove the end cap for it to fit correctly).  But it looks like there is only one size cover however.

Thanks  for posting part number Dobe .
And Nicky don't forget , you have to remove the " complete" chrome end cap off the filter , not just the CVO medallion that is double sided taped on to the end . I didn't use the WD40 trick and creased the cap when getting it off . It is also just double sided glue taped to the end of the actual filter  :nixweiss:
But it does look great when done  :2vrolijk_21:

The part you need is #28740-10.  My filter did not have the medallion installed so, I just placed the filter in the cover, added Loctite to the screws and tightened it evenly. It took me less than 10 minutes to install.

thanks for these directions- I looked all over for them and couldn't find them (hate the new HD parts pages-have no instructions)- these pics you posted will be a big help.
