Signs of failing ACR
« on: June 17, 2013, 08:25:58 AM »

Just wondering what are the signs of a failing ACR? Most of the time my starter spins the engine over very well. However, on rare occasion, which happened in the montains this weekend, when I first hit the starter button, it sounds as if my almost new battery is weak on first turn over but recovers. My bike is a 2008 with 35,000 miles. I have already had the once failing compensator replaced with the updated SE version. Is this weak first turnover caused by ACR's not opening properly for cranking?

It's certainly possible.  You can figure it out by checking your compression.  It's also possible you're ready for another replacement SE compensator.  How many miles are on your current replacement compensator?  The MOCO offers a kit of replacement wear parts for the SE compensator.  It's a little less costly, so you don't have to replace the entire piece.  The kit is part number 83935-09A.  (of course, it's not as cost efficient as having a compensator that lasts the life of the bike without wearing out....)

I'm on my third compensator in my bike...

I have about 8,000 miles on the SE Compensator. When the other one was failing, the bike would spit back and bark when trying to crank. This is not like that in that the motor turns over freely. I am just in fear of being stuck somewhere with the battery not being strong enough to push through the high compression.

...another sure sign is that the dealer will just sell you a new battery to fix the problem. I swear some dealers don't even know about ACR's yet.  :P

I was experiencing same problem on my '07 a while back.  I thought 'it can't be ACRs since this is my brand new motor.'  I had it in dealer's shop a couple months ago for another matter and tech noticed it doing it a couple times.  He told me 'bad battery.'  Well my battery was less than two years old and I am anal retentive about keeping it on a tender when parked in the garage so I thought 'no way.'  But my dealer has some fancy dandy battery load tester and showed me a printout indicating that my battery was marginal.  Although I was still disbelieving and did not have the dealer replace the battery, I did order a new Deka battery and I'll be darned since replacing the battery the problem hasn't happened again!  So if all else is good it may well be a weak battery.

I had a similar problem on my 05 bike. Battery was 2 years old and same symptoms. New battery fixed it! :2vrolijk_21:

To add another possibility that you may need to check your battery cables and ground tab. The one under the starter requires the starter removed biy the good thing is that the newer starter can be removed without removing the primary.
