I'd Like To Share The Ride From HELL!!! Pt 1 and Pt 2
« on: June 24, 2013, 10:31:19 AM »

Well it started out like any other ride, but we were heading to the Super Chevy Happening at the old Gateway International Park near East St. Louis IL.

Saturday weather looked good for my O’Fallon MO area, but not so good for St. Louis 30 miles to the east.  As it turned out, Saturday at the raceway was got dumped on big time with heavy rains.

So on Sunday the weather was better and off we went, the wife and I.

What a BIG disappointment!  The event calendar on the Internet was packed with things going on with huge swap meet and show cars with Jet cars on the dragstrip with some nice Chevy’s running.

We got at the complex at 11:00 am, a little late, but with the event going to 5:00 pm, we felt that we were good.  There were not 100 people in the grandstands after the jet cars ran.  There were three vendors in the swap meet area and one of them were packing up.  There was not one show or non race car there.  The pits were quite full with race cars and that was fun to walk around.

We decided to get a corn dog and soda.  Two foot long corn dogs and two sodas set us back $24.00, what a rip off…

We were having so much fun we could just chit.  We decided to just leave and ride.

We headed north and rode up into Alton IL and then up the river road along the Mississippi River.  It’s a beautiful ride and we do it quite often.

The road led us to Hardin IL where we love to eat at the Riverdock Restaurant.  Great food!

Rather than head north to take the road, we picked south on the peninsula and take the Golden Eagle Ferry, but it was closed.  The old Winfield Ferry has been closed for several years, but when the river Illinois Rive is high, they go back into business to help out the Golden Eagle Ferry.

Okay, I apologize for the rambling above, but I did have to vent about the very lousy turn out at the Super Chevy event.  Now we’re getting to the ride from hell.

When the river is high, like it is now with all the rain we’ve had locally and all the rain further north, it gets hard to drive around.

The Winfield Ferry is out on a very low traveled road and there is about a 1/2 mile toward the end that’s all gravel.  When we got to the river, the ferry docking point was on higher ground.  The road out to it was only about 2” to 4” above the river water level and no rails on the narrow road.  My wife just hung on and closed her eyes.

To be continued...

And now with the ride.

We got to the ferry and they were just about ready to leave.  We looked north and there was a huge cold front moving in very quickly and it looked totally dark, it was only around 5:00 pm.  We met a couple with a ’56 T-Bird from near where we lived and we were discussing this monster storm coming in VERY fast.  He said that the car leaked a bit in the rain, I could only imagine how much it would with this rain coming.

All the cars ahead of us said that as soon as they got on the ground ahead, they would let us get ahead of them, which they very graciously did for us.

The sky was getting even darker and the lightening was starting to appear more frequently.

The road away from the river to highway 79 was about 3 miles.  The road on the Missouri side was also very narrow, but blacktop all the way but runs through a major flood plain.  I would think a couple weeks ago that this entire area was under about 3’ of water, but yesterday the road was “just” above water level.

I high tailed it and was scaring my wife the way I was riding on the blacktop as there were lots of 90° sharp turns and some of them were still covered with flood plain debris.  I did slow down a bit and then we got out into the open.  We heard later that there were 40 to 50 mph winds associated with the very large cold front and storm.

The road was basically east / west and the winds were from the direct north.  This road was no different, blacktop and very narrow, just enough room for two cars to pass each other.

We look out at ALL the water and the road with no rails.  The water was starting to surge from all the wind and water levels in the fields of probably only a couple feet.  The pictures you see about hurricanes smashing again the piers and water flying up, that’s almost what this looked like.

We started across the road in the fields and thought that we were good to go.  A bit further we had water splashing up on the right side of the road, our side, we were heading west.  This was not too bad because I could just scoot over to the left lane and make it through.  Then the water started to run across the whole road surface.

Just around another slight curve in the road we looked further ahead and there were whitecaps across the road, just like in the news clips.  My wife again shut her eyes and just hung on tightly.  The winds was directly from our left at 40 to 50 mph and alone it was blowing us all over the road, let alone having to negotiate the road and flowing water over it.

We got to the area of whitecaps over the road.  I was in the left oncoming lane, no traffic to deal with.  When I started to hit the water, I had about 100 yards of what I thought would be just an inch or two over the road.  I looked down and the blacktop was all broken up under the water and was very rough, probably an inch or two up/down chunks.  When I got to the whitecaps, the water got deeper.  I had water at my running boards.  Figured I’d hit it a bit to keep my momentum going.

The water started to spray from the front tire and all the water to the right blew right back onto us.  For about 10’ to 15’, the water got a few inches deeper and the water was spraying very hard with all the wind.  I’ll have to admit that I was a bit scared at this time, but I kept going through.

About the time I hit the end of the very deep water, the motor stalled out.  That was about underwear changing time for both of us.

I had enough momentum to get up out of the very deep water and it was only a few inches deep at that point.  I kept trying the started and finally it fired back up.  I think that I soaked the air filter and that’s what choked out the motor.  If it had been water on the ignition, I doubt that it would have restarted that quickly.

We made it through that and only had a couple other water crossings.  I suspect that the water from a few weeks ago had washed out that spot pretty bad.  I imagine that it was mostly do the wind and the storm surge creating all the rise in water level on the only thing for miles blocking the water’s path.

We hit 79 and started south.  It was totally dark over top and the traffic was not going much over the 60 mph speed limit.  I was hoping that we could out run the storm.  We got a few sprinkles on 79.  But what my wife and I noticed was that in about 1/2 mile the temp went from the 70’s back into the 90’s as we drove out of the cold front leading the storm cell.

We had about 8 miles to head west on I-70 to O’Fallon MO.  Just as we were getting off 70 we started to get a few very large rain drops.  We had about 1 mile to get home.  We got in the garage and about 10 minutes later the sky let loose with some major rain and wind.

I’d say we were very lucky yesterday and I rode like a fool and I probably shouldn’t have, but it ended up good.

Sorry for the rambling, but I had to share this.  I know some of you guys are in my area and will testify to the intensity of the storm yesterday evening.

Thanks for reading.

Sorry about the double post on Pt 2.  It shows I can remove it, but it asks if I want to remove the thread, which I don't want to do.  So I'll leave it unless a moderator can remove JUST the second Pt 2 post.

Thanks.

Quite a tale! Thanks for sharing. You were blessed that it wasn't worse. Don't know what I would have done if I had seen water on the road. Don't think my huevos are as big as yours ;)

Sorry there are no pictures.

I wish I could have gotten pictures, but with the thought to hit the highway and out run the fast moving storm, pictures were not an option.

I may go back out there and get a picture of the area in the road that had the drop off in it just to see for sure what I was riding over.

I was very happy to be riding alone yesterday, or just one bike that is.  With multiple bikes, it would have been dicy at the least as I'm sure some would not have tried to go through and wanted to wait.  Others may have had their motors stop in the deep part and then how do you go "in" to get them out.  The water was moving very fast over the road.  I can see how cars can get swept off a road without the water being very deep.

As the old saying goes, "I'd rather be lucky than good".  Or luck beats skill any day of the week...

My wife was laughing about the whole ordeal when we got home, but I'm sure she not laughing during our drenching going through the deep water.

That was great! Another survival story from the road.  Next time it looks stormy you ought to ask her if she wants to take a ride and see her response!   :bananarock:

I was funnin with you Dan.  Everybody told us we were crazy, too....especially when we started shooting pics with the cameras hanging around our necks.  But when you're stuck in it and there literally isn't anywhere to get out of it (or you wouldn't be "stuck" in it).....you gotta do what you gotta do.

It sucks when all the cars and trucks are stopped and you have to keep going because you can't stop. :nixweiss:

Had to be nerve wracking going through white caps on what used to be a road. And with those high winds had to be very scary. I bet your adrenalin was pumping after you got home

Was going to talk about the slide of the event you went to from the years of Super Chevy Sundays, but after reading the harrowing tale, just can't. Riding with a BSR in water up to the boards on a unknown surface...........can't get much worse. Glad it all worked out!!

I was very disappointed that the Super Chevy Weekend was just a flop...

Now Sunday I understand that things wind down later in the afternoon, but at 11:00 am things are supposed to be still going strong.

The website shows tons of activities going on, but all there was was the class racing and the run of the two jet cars.

There were no other cars anywhere, as in show or display cars.  I wanted to see what was going on lately with Gen 1 Novas, but none to look at other than a few race cars.

And yes, water up to my running boards and then the motor stalling out was a big bump to the ole heart rate.  This was not just a high water city street that you might stall in and walk through the rest of the way.  Now I highly doubt that I could have been killed if I went off the edge of the road, but right now I have no idea how deep the washout was just a few feet to my left.  Given the fact that this same field was probably under about 2' of water a couple weeks ago, hard telling what previous damage had been done to the road or ditches.  Having the wife on the back of the bike added a bit more responsibility than just me falling over and getting wet.  As I said in my ride report, we found out on the news/weather later that evening that the winds were gusting over 50 mph.  At the time they felt more like 80 mph winds.

You are all correct; luck was on my side Sunday afternoon.  It truly could have been a lot worse.  I'm wondering, if my bike had gone over the side of the road in what might have been a deep enough hole to submerge the bike completely, would it have had to been totaled or just dried out?

I'm rambling again guys, sorry.

Thanks for the comments all.
