Blank electrical connector behind light in upper fork area
« on: June 26, 2013, 06:26:50 PM »

Anyone know what the blank electrical connector behind light in upper fork area is used for?  It is on the right side opposite the speaker/GPS connector.

I am assuming it is for the running light on the international models, but not sure.  Just curious.

If I am reading my service manual correctly, I believe you are correct that it is for the international models.

Would like to use to hook up driving lights.  If you have a wiring diagram where does this wire terminate.  It has no power now, I assume it is fused but Harley did not install a fuse on the US models.

Take a look at this front lighting schematic. I am assuming that this connector is the "Position Lamp" (HDI Only),  but i am not 100% sure.  Problem is,  on the main harness schematic,  I don not see a connector marked [38B].  I would have thought that the O/W wire is hot and the BK wire is ground.  I am surprised that you say it has no power now.  Did you check for power with the ignition on and try both high and low beam positions on the main headlight switch?  I have not checked the power to this connector on my bike.

Thanks for the electrical info.  No I did not check with high beam, only ignition on with low.  Will check it tomorrow when I remove the windshield to wash the bike.  Thanks again !

No power with circuit with ignition on, or on high or low.  My guess it is fused or blanked off somewhere.

The red rubber cap comes off and inside are two prongs, there is no power to either of the prongs with ignition on with bright lights or low beam lights.

If you want to "turn on" the front position lamp circuit on a HDLAN bike like the 2011 and later Softy, you will need to have someone with the proper scan tool go into the BCM menu's and toggle it on in the customization and lighting section.

The brave new world (for Harley, not the rest of the world) of electronics has made this stuff a little different from the old Harley electrical systems.  Unfortunately it often makes little mods tougher, since most of us don't have the proper scan tools for all our various vehicles, but in some cases it is pretty handy.  For instance, I used to always buy kits to add daytime running lights to momma's new cars.  They were never plug and play, but involved installing modules under the hood, running wires in the engine compartment and under the dash, splicing wires, etc.  The kits usually cost over $100, and then I had to add the cost of the bandaids for my scraped knuckles and heat paks for my aching back.  Now when she gets a new vehicle all I have to do is slip the kid at the dealership $50 to hook up his scan tool and turn the daytime running light feature on in the software.  That's just one example of the many things that can be customized electronically if you know where to look.

Jerry, enough of all that crazy talk!  We're Harley riders and don't need all that fancy futuristic garbage.  Next thing we know you will be way out there talking about things like throttle by wire, advanced ECM modules, and water jacketed engines. ;)
