A little scary issue yesterday
« on: June 30, 2013, 04:57:40 PM »

Riding home yesterday my speedometer decided to die on my less than 1000mi 2013 FLHTCSE8 Annv. Ahead was a stop sign and when I stopped, it shut off. I turned everything off and then restarted and all was fine. On the highway going 75 and with the cruise on it decided to stop the speedo again but this time a new twist....the bike began to accel hard. Quickly in my mind I thought touch the front brake to shut the cruise off and if that didn't work I was going to hit the kill switch.  The brake worked. Since traffic wasn't too bad I decided to go on cruise again just to make sure I didn't do something stupid to cause it ( I know I didn't but I noticed I didn't throw a code and the HD dealer would probably just look at me telling the story and thinking....ya right).  After 5 mins it did it again however I got my code, and I turned the cruise off. A little scary but once I got home I had a mixture of little more upset and a lot mad at HD.
Today I took the bike to the dealer which was great timing since Tues is my scheduled 1000 mi service. My dealer in PA is good and Im sure they will get it right but it really stinks that it had to happen. I have always said that any company would love to hire me as their quality control guy for I seem to attract defects.  I will get back to this thread to tell you how the story ends.

Looking forward to hearing more on this one.  Glad you're OK.  Sounds scary, to say the least! :nervous:

Damn scary indeed.  Sometimes I have my doubts about this fly-by-wire stuff.  Electronics can be finicky.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Happened to me several times on my '99 which had cables. Also cruise would quit working and later it would. Never got to the root of the problem before I traded the bike but dealer replaced lots of parts including the module itself several times. Sudden unintended acceleration does happen - but fortunately on none of my bikes since.

Hope they find and fix your problem.

I have to agree with you on that.  A cable seems to make more sense to me but so far my FBW bikes have worked well.

BRWK - Hope they find the issue and get it corrected. Will check back for updates.

You should ask the dealer to pay for your change of boxers! lol. Glad you figured it out that day and are safe.

After re-reading your original post, I would venture to say that the problem is within your link from the speedometer to your cruise control.  Speedo stopped and gave your cruise control a command saying the speed dropped, thus increasing speed.  Definite issue that needs addressed and for safety's sake, I would not run the cruise control until it was fixed.  If you must run cruise, get yourself very familiar with the kill switch on the bike.

I would suspect a failed speed sensor on the trans.

Maybe I'm way off on this one, but I had something very similar happen, but there was no cruise control involved.  I had everything on the bike turning off, the bike was bucking, and suddenly the entire bike shut down including all electrical.  Mine was caused by one of the battery bolts being just a smidgeon from completely falling out.  It was like the entire bike was possessed, but it was a simple fix.  Just a thought.

Update 7/3/13....the 1000 service was completed however the speed senor is on order.  The code (I didn't ask the number) said it was the speed sensor and from my description they agreed.  So hopefully I will get her back next week and then the testing begins before we go to Sturgis.  We ride so at least I have time to check it out and if that wasn't the part I have time to take it back.  My wife offered her front seat of her TriGlide this weekend  8)

Just got my bike back today.  The code was P0502 and the speed sensor was replaced.  Seems to be ok but I have 2 weeks/weekends to ride before we ride to Sturgis to test it out.  I know another thread is talking about the speed sensor and water however my bike only has seen water so far from the dealer before I picked it up.  We will see.  Also today I installed my Jackpot head pipe from my old bike and a new tune from my Power Vision.  Decided to keep the muffs stock due to the sound is good (actually I was surprised).  She's back in the garage and all is good  :apple:
