Mounting a HD Radar detector on 07 Ultra
« on: October 12, 2006, 11:25:23 AM »

Ok, here's my problem. I've got a new HD radar detector with the Ultra mount. However, it will not mount on the Ultra because of the the leather dashboard that came with the jester.

With both brain cells working as fast as they can, I've come up with only two solutions. One is to cut the leather dashboard somehow and mount the Radar detector which will probably look like crap or take off all together and put plugs into the holes made by the dashboard. Not sure how that would look.

Anyone have a possible solution? I could possibly take the HD detector back and mount a standard detector on a bar mount, but it would look a bit cheezy at best. I really like the looks and how the HD detector works and how it's mounted, but if there's another mount for the SE or one coming out for the SE that would be great! Thanks.

John,

This is an ongoing issue with the SEUC, many have removed the pad to accomodate dash storage, GPS etc.  Not sure that there would be enough demand to offer a SEUC specific mod for these options.

I believe others have had the pad modified to accomodate these items as well, any good uphostery shop could do a mod.

Thanks for the comeback. I think I'll try to find a custom uphostery shop that might be able to do the leather work. Would be nice to keep the SE dash, but if it has to go, then it'll have to go. I'll definetely check it out and see if a resolve can be found. Again Thanks.

I had the same issue with my '06, and was told by the dealer that it couldn't be done.  I knew I could do it so I had them pull the dash pad off, mount the radar detector and GPS.  I then took the dash pad to an upholstery shop where they modified it to fit around the two items.  See Pics

Thanks for the pics. Looks clean! The 1k service coming up very soon, I'll have the dealer take the dash off and mount the RDetector and then down to the shop for a redesign of the dash. Thanks for the information and again for the pics.

hogheritage04 can you show a pic with the detector off so we can see the mod to the pad?  Like the idea looks very clean.

Got the detector mounted. Left two 1/2 inch holes in dash. Not very becoming for sure. Got two plugs for now to cover up the holes. I'm going with the suggestion of having the dash cut and then mount back on. Should be good.

This is not a tough project at all.  Take off the leather pad, remove the staples, fold back the leather, . Put bracket on follow printed instructions.  After drilling and tapping wire, make a template, and cut the dash plasctic only.  Cut to conform around the detector bracket.  Dont try to make it all around the bracket, I did it once and got very lucky, but easier to cut it off about the 5 oclock position.  Leave about 1/4" space around bracket and dashpad. .  Then fold back the leather, and superglue it to the folds near the edge.  Then razor off the excess leather, and voila, a finished product that does look good.

This sounds much more difficult than it is. Finally, if you really screw it up, by another pad for 70$.

Thanks Rhino. I'll take a good look at it and sounds like it's something I can do. The screw up factor looks minimal.  ;D

Yes Ug,

It is pretty easy. The hardest part was drilling the fairing, more of an emotional thing, ya know.... The 1/2" hole they show to drill, well, no options on that one, but it was disconcerting, that as I read the instructions, that the 1/2" hole is for that plug on the rear of the detector, the larger one, and anyway, after I drilled the big hole to put that connector through, it says, it is not used.  Arggh. But anyway, I have no idea what that connector is for, but I tie wrapped it off to the side so it would not rattle against anything.
