@ questions on installing pipes
« on: July 08, 2013, 12:04:40 PM »

1 Do I need to replace the crush gaskets in the head if they show no damage and 2 how do you work the snap ring on these pipes. They aren't snap rings they just have diagonal edges with no holes to use snap ring pliers.

Always replace the gaskets!  As for the snap rings....I'm not sure, but I think you can do it by hand.

The gaskets are a judgment call.  Most peeps replace them.  Some reuse them without issue.  Lots have issues with new or used gaskets.  Personally, I reuse them if they are not harmed and have not been over tightened.  Never had an issue........But I keep some new ones around just in case.

The retaining rings can be removed by just grabbing the end with a good set of pliers.   You can get a set of Horseshoe Ring pliers for like $35.  They work well, but aren't really cost effective to just pull a set of flange retainer rings.

I just worked the clips off by hand and a screwdriver it was a snap (pun intended) some aftermarket pipes use stock gaskets and some use the SE gaskets. find out which ones you need first as if you install the stock gaskets you will ruin them taking them out. Not easy to install the stock gasket. I use a very large 1/2" socket with a long extension in backwards to gently tap the stock ones in place. it works well but they can be a bear to get started straight.

I put my pipes on right when I got the bike and used the old (not very) gaskets.  No problems so far.

I personally use new ones every time.  They are not that expensive and if they leak its just a big waste of time to redo it over.  Some friends use my garage and they reused theirs and some have had leaks right away some never did.  Some start just after a few rides.  But it really may depend on how they tighten them also.   But they are not that expensive and I have a extra set in the box just in case I would ever need to pull the pipes for some reason and the dealer would be closed or save me a trip at that moment.

But like I said I have seen it done with used gaskets and have no problems.   But with my luck I would be redoing my work when I could be riding.

If your pipes don't need special gaskets, then you could probably get away with using the old ones but I'd spend the money and install new ones. The HD dealer gave me beveled gaskets but the Bassani told me to use flat ones which they sent me. The retaining rings can be taken off with a flat tip if need be. I like using my piston ring pliers to expand it without tweaking them.

I buy new gaskets, since it's a relatively inexpensive cost compared to fully assembling the exhaust and then learning there's a leak and having to start over....which would require new gaskets anyway.

I reused my old ones, 18K miles, only because the stealer was 30 miles away and closed Sun & Mon. Don't recommend that as they are cheap. Plan ahead. Small straight blade is all you need. Lift one gap edge over and work around.
