25,000 Service Cost
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:06:13 PM »

I have been checking with a few local dealers in this area and I am amazed at the differences in cost I am being quoted for a 25,000 service.  I have also noticed that some dealers are quoting two prices for the 25,000 service.  One with the gas filter being replaced as per the HD Maintenance Schedule and another price for not having the gas filter replaced.  The range has been $319.00 to $777.00 with the gas filter replacement.   The service department that quoted the $319.00 cost said he did not know the gas filter is to be replaced per the schedule.  When I infomed him that it did he said the cost is still $319.00.  I definitely would double check that cost and expertise if I decided to go with them.  It took the $777.00 service department at least 5 minutes to calculate the cost so I also question his dealership.  I have one more dealer that I will check with tomorrow when the service manager is in house.  He is my local dealer and he has always been good to me in the past but when I stopped in the other day his assistant was one of those who quoted 2 prices and she appeared to not be confident in her knowledge and quote.  I am not mechanically inclined and I would rather have the dealer perform the service.

As always, thanks for your input.

If you are at all handy with a wrench, you can replace the fuel filter yourself for about $50 in parts.  Takes about 45 minutes the first time and you don't need any special tools nor do you need to drain the tank.  Search YouTube for a how-to video and save yourself $300 bucks.

Eloy at High-Country HD will give you good, solid information. I trust him 100%
I would NOT take it to Rocky Mountain HD, Mile High maybe, Thunder Mountain, no.

Thanks Michael.

Eloy is the one I was waiting until tomorrow to talk too.  Thunder Mountain is the one that quoted $777.00.  Eloy has serviced all three of our bikes in the past and who I also trust 100%, but when I talked to his assistant on Sunday, I sort of was blown away by her responses.  I will talk to Eloy about my concerns with that conversation also.

Used to be that pretty much all Harley dealerships had a service menu board in the writeup area that listed the price for all the various service intervals.  I'm surprised you had to ask and the people had to try to calculate a price for you.

The Harley labor time standards call for 2.3 hours labor to perform a 25k service on a Touring model.  The dealers of course are under no obligation to use the Harley standards for customer paid work, but I just offer that tidbit up to help you guesstimate whether a particular shop is trying to rape you or not.  For instance, if they have a stated labor rate of $90 per hour, and they want to charge you $500 labor for the service, you can easily determine if you really want to grab your ankles for these thieves or try another place.  And if you want to take this a step further, it's pretty easy to determine parts cost as well.  For instance, Harley motor oil is $11.95 per quart, I think the filter is around $15, the fuel filter is about $17, the top plate gasket (for access to the fuel filter) is about $7, etc.  If I remember correctly, the trans and primary fluids aren't included at 25k (10k intervals for primary, 20k intervals for trans).

I can't imagine what that place that quoted nearly $800 was planning to do for that price, other than have a party after work with all the extra money they liberated from you.  I'd avoid that place like the plague.

Thanks Jerry for your input.  I too was surprised that the old service menu board at my local dealer had been replaced with an electronic monitor that list costs of 5, 10, and 20K but not for 25K services  I will also point this out to the service manager tommorrow.  The $777.00 dealer is gone for me and I get real worried real fast when a dealer quotes substantially lower than the norm like the $319.00 dealer.

its also noteworthy that the fuel filter is not scheduled to be replaced at 25k intervals anymore either.  in my 2010 rgc it called for the 25k interval change.  in the manual for my wife's 2012, the interval is now 100,000 miles.  i'm not sure what changed, as according to the parts manuals, they are still the same filter.  the only thing i can think of is that maybe dealers were having to fork out some extra on their dime for breaking the plastic filter housing?......

i also noticed that in the 2013 cvo manual, the spark plug replacement interval has changed from 25k to 30k miles now...

I also noted that change in the maintenance requirements and got a real chuckle out of it.  I just assumed that Harley talked to the gasoline industry and got assurances that the fuel supply was much cleaner these days so they didn't need to change filters as often. ;)

I've noticed the same thing in the automotive industry btw.  My wife's most recent vehicle doesn't specify any fuel filter change for the life of the vehicle.  Those oil companies must have really cleaned up their act!

A lot of the newer vehicles have the filter inside of the fuel tank mounted to the fuel pump. Not very user friendly to change. My truck is one of those

while that may be true, in the case of hd my 2010 rg has the same part number for the fuel filter/housing/etc. as my wife's 2012.  my change intervals are 25k, while hers are at 100k.  nothing different hardware wise, so why the change?
