Help im so confused
« on: July 09, 2013, 03:01:17 PM »

Had my 08 ultra built to 103 stage one. I wanna use this primarily for two up touring. I have a nicelt tune 110 cvo 2012 street glide too. Harley shop just called me and said i have accrued enuf points ( from spending a bundle) to have them build this 103 to stage 4 w dyno tune and it will only cost me $1200 which s
Certainly seems like a deal. My question is since i wanna use this bike for long distance touring will a stage four 103 lose so much reliability (provided i dont ride it hard much) that it wouldnt be a good idea to do the stage 4 at any price???? Ay wisdom you can share will be appreciated.

It sounds to me like you have identified yourself as an "easy mark" and/or cash machine to your dealer.  Unless you and your wife combined weigh over 400 pounds (not counting luggage, etc.)...........you can tour easily with what ya have.   I'm not saying the stage 4 would be unreliable,  first of all I haven't seen it shown just what stage 4 consists of.......but you don't need it unless :drink: its for bragging rights.

There is more than one 103 Stage IV kit in the catalog, and the pricing of course varies.  If you're talking about the TC96/103 Conversion Stage IV kit, it comes with heads, 58mm throttle body, 259e cams, 10.5:1 pistons, SEPST, etc., and the kit alone retails for around $2250 before labor.  There is another kit for a lower price that claims to be legal.  It's cheaper because it doesn't include the SEPST but uses a Harley street legal download instead. I think that one runs slightly less than $1900.  Do you already have an SEPST?  If so, you don't need the kit that includes one.

I can't offer any answer to your reliability question, but before you pull the trigger you may want to verify exactly which 103 Stage IV kit this dealership is trying to sell.  And does the $1200 price they quoted include just the kit, or is all labor included as well?  If it's an all-inclusive price it sounds too good to be true for a Harley shop.

My brother has a 2012 Street Glide Stage 4 103. (SE heads, 10.5:1 SE pistons and Woods 777 cams) He has the stock throttle body.

My stock 2011 110 Street glide ( pipes and tuner only) runs just fine against him. The low torque tractor cam in your 110 is perfect for 2 up touring.

That all said, save your money and tour on your 110.

I already have the better tuner amd will keep my 254 e cammcuz i like where the power band is on it for loaded touring w my wife. I know a lotta guys like the 255 for its low end grunt but the 254e pulls slightly at low end and more at mid range which i find is good for passing on highway

The kit is the better one and its so cheap because they have a point system and i have accrued enuf points (spent enuf money) in six years such that it would only cost me about $1200 to go stage 4. I wouldnt spend what full cost is for the stage 4 but by cashing in points it brings the cost down to$1200. I just dont really want to lose reliability or make it noisier. This bike has really nice helio bars that sit me way back and arms are so comfy after two neck surgeries and three rotator cuff surgeries PLUS i have an arc amp and four focal speakers that blows away my cvo stereo system and has toupak so these are all reasons i will do touring with this one.

No matter what i do i will take to doc for tuning as what he did w me cvo is unbelievable.

It doesn't sound like a bad deal but personally speaking with the increase in power I would always be wondering where I will be when the crank fails.  If you have the extra power you will be tempted to use it while you are touring or out for a quick ride.  If the cranks were not so prone to fail I would jump all over that deal.  In my opinion which may differ than most the extra smiles are not worth building it up so it may fail sooner.

I don't understand why you would want to buy a kit that has several parts in it that you don't need.  You don't want to use the 259e cams that come with the kit, you don't need the SEPST, and you don't need the pistons if you don't plan to do the cams.  If you just do the TB and heads, the 58mm throttle body runs about $450 at full retail and the heads are less than $1k at full retail.  So now that $1200 isn't looking like such a great deal.

I'm starting to agree with moscooter on this one.

Tour on the FLHXSE3 and buy T Shirts with your points.  It doesn't take long to eat up those points at a Harley store.

The Harley dealer called you?? That means they are looking for work.........save your points for something you really need and go touring on either one. They are not going to give anything away.....maybe the kit is in stock and they want to get rid of it......the idea is to get you to use your points and give them something to do at the same time.......
