Comfort Profile Saddlebag Guard Kit
« on: July 10, 2013, 12:39:31 PM »

On my continuing quest to make Janet comfortable on my ride, I'm looking at the Comfort Profile Saddlebag Guard Kit PN-49179-09. I don't want to lose the saddlebag guards but Janet's leg rests against it while we're riding. She's not complaining but I want to fix this if possible. I have two questions.

1) Has anyone gone this route and did it help?

2) The H-D website says this kit will fit a 2013 FLHTK but not my 2013 SEUC. I can't imagine the mounts being different.  Any idea why it wouldn't work?

Thanks,

Joe

I can't think of any reason they wouldn't work.  Let me know how they work.   Mrs. Train is only 5'2", and I'm sure she'd appreciate the extra room.

Sent from my iPad, probably while I'm pooping.

Ultra has the wrap around saddlebag guards, the Limited does not.  I'd guess this will not work unless you totally remove the wrap around guards, which mount to the stock guard.

I think this is just one more example of the guys writing the info for the catalog not understanding what comes on the CVO models.

The regular FLHT and FLHTCU come with the wrap around guards, and they don't offer a comfort version for those as best I can determine.  HOWEVER, the FLHTCUSEx does not come with those wrap around guards, they come with the single vertical bar just like the bikes the catalog says the comfort guards will fit.

The mounting locations on the frame are the same, and the attachment to the saddlebag support bars appears to be the same as well.  IMHO it should be a simple swap involving three bolts per side.

I agree Jerry, it sure looks like it should fit to me too. I'm going to give it a try and I'll let y'all know how it works out.

I wasn't aware the FLHTCUSEx didn't have the wrap arounds.  I see it now in your profile pic.  I agree, should bolt right up.

I installed the Comfort Profile Guards today. As we suspected, the catalog and website are wrong, the bars are a direct bolt on. It's a little hard to tell in the pictures but Janet's got a lot more room now. With the original guard, her calf was laying on the bar and she couldn't get her foot back on the board any further than you see in the picture. With the CP guards, she can move her foot to the rear of the footboards comfortably. I had her move her foot forward, trying to copy the position with the other guard to show the difference.

It's raining AGAIN today so we probably won't get out for a ride but it looks like it's going to be much better.

Would you not have gotten the same outcome by moving the floor board up and forward a notch or two?

The boards were forward when I bought the bike and they dug into my calves anytime my legs were down. It put me in an uncomfortable and somewhat unstable position anytime I stopped. I worked with my wife to find the best compromise for both of us and this board position was it. She wasn't complaining about the guards but it bothered me that it was hitting her legs. The new guards fixed that.

This is a nice find!  Looking at making my better half more comfy too.

One thing I'm hearing now is that she'd like an alternative place to grab (here's where all the comments will pile in I'm sure) for those infrequent "oh sh#@" moments.  I'm looking at p/n 91583-99 passenger grab rail, as an option.  Anyone have something like this installed?

Yes, I put one on my 2012 Ultra CVO with no problem. My wife was used to it on our last two Ultras. I also have the covers on it. Very nice.

Don't know if you've tried this, I swapped sides with my passenger floor boards. It gave me a lot more room when stopped, doesn't seem to bother the passengers. The big difference though is the passengers I have had are not married to me therefore not allowed to complain, they usually comply.  ;)

Thank you!  Okay, back to the HD website and more exercise for my credit card...

Brian, got mine off of Ebay. May be able to save a few bucks. You just have to make sure of the mounting. Compare to HD catalog. The newer frame mounts a little different than on the older frame bike.

hep0950 - the catalog indicates that there might be a fit issue with rear speakers.  did you run across any?
