Any tips for Canadian trip
« on: July 14, 2013, 07:59:20 PM »

Aug. 3rd I will be leaving with a group of about 6 to do some sight seeing in British Columbia.  We are leaving from the Seattle area heading north to Prince George.  Then heading south east through Jasper and Banff.  Heading back west along the U.S. border.

We all have either enhanced licenses or passports.  Also all of our lodgings are already booked.  What I am interested in is if anyone has any tips or suggestions for travelling in Canada on Motorcycles.  Oh and I also have a Canadian proof of insurance card for the trip.

All I can think of is to use my credit card as much as possible, and head out with a little Canadian money.  Anyone have any other tips?

I have a friend that just returned from a trip up that way. He was sidelined twice in route for parts--a belt and a tire. So I am thiking be sure you have a emergency breakdown kit.

Safe travels

Just got back from the Cassier Hwy and Jasper, Banff, Calgary and Glacier. If you get a chance, do "Road to the Sun" in Glacier MT, it's awesome.  No problems in Canada, never saw a patrolman on the highway, or anyone pulled over. Speed limit right around 70 most of the time.  Gas=$6.00/gal, but there is no ethanol in it, so it's better gas than here in the Midwest.  Great roads. The road between Banff and Calgary was washed out in the flood, both lanes and closed for a week. It had opened the day before I went through and was open one lane each way. The south bound lane was moving smoothly, but the north bound lane was backed up 5 miles. It was their July 1st holiday weekend though and everyone was leaving town.  The Husky gas station pumps don't take US credit cards, so you have to take your card into the station and  have them hold it while pumping.  All Canada gas stations are pay first, then pump.  All stations had 91-93 octane gas.  I'd much rather travel in Canada than the US as far as touring goes.

No not ALL gas stations are pay first. In Alberta MOST ARE NOT pay first. Lived here all my life and I've never had to pay first. BC though is a different story. Most there ARE pay first.

Ha, you're right, by the time I got out of BC, I was trained and can remember in Alberta going in to pre-pay and being told I didn't need to.

Almost all stations have pay at the pump....and Chevron has 94 octane.

An additional tip, do not even attempt to bring handguns into Canada, you can advise border guards if you have weapons you will have to check them and pick up on thr way out of thr country, however you will have to return to the same border crossing to retreive. Check on the Canada Border Services website for rules.

HWY 16 from Prince George to Jasper has lots of wildlife, moose being the biggest/most frequent visitor to the roads, pay attention for wildlife.
Kind of a boring trip from that way, some decent scenery, but not much in the way of little towns etc.
Going to Jasper through Kamloops on HWY 5 is a pretty decent ride. Lots of little towns to stop at, a few good biker friendly pubs etc.
Can go whitewater rafting, take in Mt. Robson etc that way as well...
Not sure if you have firm plans that take you to PG, if not might want to reconsider your route..

Let your banks know you'll be traveling... had my primary checking debit card shut down because we were making about 500 to 600 miles a day and the bank thought it was kinda suspicious.  Had to call and explain.   8)

Funseeker 57, if you get far enough east go to Waterton Park in Waterton Lakes national park which connects to Glacier National Park just north of the U.S. border, almost directly south of Calgary. There is a tiny border crossing just south of there which will put you into Montana. I plan to do that trip again next year.
