240/40 R 18 M/C 79V : Metzeler vs. Dunlop
« on: July 16, 2013, 04:46:52 PM »

Hi there

It seems, that I have to change the rear tire after 8000km. On a previous bike (Enduro, not Harley) I was very pleased with my Metzeler tire. The original Dunlop 240/40 R 18 M/C 79V was ok, but I'm wondering, if the performance and durability would be even better with the Metzeler.

What are you putting on the CVO Breakout on the rear wheel?
Does anybody have experience with the Metzeler ME 880 Marathon XXL?

Cheers!

I ran 880 XXL's on my 2008 FXSTC Customer for 5 years.  Love the tire....excellent road feel.  The cupped design really lets you lay the bike over easily in corners.  Road adhesion is great.

I hate, hate, Dunlops.  Now that there is a standard Breakout in the lineup, I am hoping Metzeler and Avon began making a 130 21" front tire for our bikes so I can swap out the Dunlop rubber for them....

Hi Pilot

Thanks for your valued feedback.
Would you already change the rear tire, even if the front tire can't be changed to Metzeler right now. Shouldn't be an issue, if they are different, right?

An additional question regarding road clearance. In the past my primary case touched the road. In the mean time, we adjusted the suspension and hopefully the issue is gone...

Any idea, how the Metzeler 880 XXL tire would influence the clearance behavior on the CVO Breakout?

No idea about the clearance issue.  I understand that the Metzeler is a lower profile however.  When I switched to Metzeler 880 Marathons on my CVO Convertible, the difference in handling was easily discernible, just awesome!  I've also heard this from others too.  I'm definitely switching to Metzeler.  Its actually approaching that time soon enough, got 8500 miles on her so far.  I recall another thread somewhere that they do in fact make tires in both our front and back sizes.

hey Chrome,

you know, i have heard different opinions on this throughout the years, and I am certainly no tire expert.  I just know what feels right to me based on how i ride.

I personally would not run two different brands of tires front and back.

@speedy: Not bad 8500miles, mine didn't last that long. :)

@pilot: Basically I feel the same as you regarding different tire brands. But this morning I also felt, that I will have a Metzeler on my bike now, so I ordered already one. :)

Soon I will know, if the primary clearance will be a bigger issue with this tire.

Thanks and cu

I'm a fan of Metzler tires and have ran the Marathons on my first HD (1988 FXLR-C) for 24 of the 25yrs that I've owned it and will continue to run them until I can't buy them anymore or I retire her from the road. I've got to wait for awhile before I can justify swapping out the tires on my FXSBSE but I'll definitely have a set in a couple months.

Had dunlops on my 08 softail and I didn't like the ride at all- swapped for metzlers (like I have had on all my bikes) and a world of difference.  Had Pirelli dragons that did well 2 bikes ago but still swapped for metzlers when they wore out.  Service guys at the local dealer also agree that the dunlops are not the choice tire for the breakout. I'm experiencing the same unpleasing ride on my breakout's dunlops- just waiting to wear the tires down and metzler to put out that front tire.

I'm at > 11,000 miles now, anticipate needing a new rear tire soon.  Any primary clearance issue with the Metzeler?

Hi Speedy
The Metzeler ME 880 Marathon XXL 240/40R18 doesn't influence the primary clearance to the bad site. But as I wrote in an other thread, it's importante to respect the pegs as the limit, with the Dunlop and with the Metzeler..

But you have to know, that Metzeler doesn't release a front tire in 130/60B21 this year and may never at all.
