Arrrggghhh Oil Pump Out
« on: July 27, 2013, 10:01:27 AM »

Preliminary diagnosis by dealer is that my oil pump went out!

39,000 on the motor and at 25K they had already replaced heads and jugs because of peeling powder coat so really 14000 on new top end.
I was on my way home from work about 20 into a 40 mile trip and pulled up to the first stop light on my way home when the bike started chirping at me. It sounded like a loose exhaust cover (Had one before annoying and hard to find) Pulled up to the next light, about 1/2 mile at my regular gas station, and when bike dropped to idle I heard a tinkling metal sound, a pop, and then lost compression on 1 cylinder.

Dealer came and picked up bike and due to everyone getting ready for Sturgis has only made "Preliminary Diagnosis ". I have the extended warranty and get a Loaner while the bike is down EXCEPT there are no rentals available due to Sturgis!!!

The dealer has done all service, oil changes etc. on this bike and there are no mods.......totally stock.

What questions do I need to be asking and what kind of resolution should I be looking for?   I am leaning toward total motor replacement!

I cant believe anything would be unscathed after the loss of the oil pump. And how long was my motor starved without any obvious signs before it went out?

Thanks

Tim

Has the sound look and feel of a lifter failure taking out other parts as collateral damage.

Metal travels everywhere.
When the cam cover comes off the damage will be revealed and then in short order you will know more how to approach them with ideas for repair. Consider a HD reman motor if a lifter and or cam bearing have failed.
Dam shame.

This has happened to me twice now, last time it took me two hours to clean the metal infused oil out of the bottom of the motor.

If everything is not 100% clean the new motor will be doomed sooner or later. The lifters are better oil filters than the filter itself.
So the oil pan comes off and all lines are cleaned besides the crankcase and all ancillary parts. I seek other opinions about the cooler. I am a little skeptical that can adequately be flushed.

I agree...  Personally, I wouldn't take the chance....

The dealer is still busy with everyone leaving for Sturgis but they were supposed to check Crank run out today (Still haven't pulled the heads yet).   What kind of run out should it have. I know I have read it on here somewhere?

Per Harley standards late model cranks can run up to .012". This is a huge amount of runout and can destroy an oil pump in short order, not to mention the vibration from the engine.  Ideally you would like to see the runout at no more than .003"

Since the top plate in the newer oil pans is not removable how can you be sure the pan is completely clean? Have a job that owner blew up his Stage 4 103 and wants a 110" crate motor installed. Not comfortable with the oil pan even after a lot of cleaning. Parts washer and brake cleaner and "Dawn dish soap" baths. Told him a new oil pan is the only way to be sure. At 89 dollars an hour shop rate I think it is cheaper to go with the new pan. Bike is a FLHX with a chin fairing and he wants to keep it on and I told him he needs a oil cooler but he doesn't want a side mount and won't give up the chin fairing. Think a 110" on a FLHX will survive long without a cooler??

Look up Budd's Oil coolers.  Mounts on the bottom of the bike.  Or look up Wards Part Works fans.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.   ;)  I'm very interested to hear the outcome for PapaT's bike.

I have heard of shops that order new. A Baker +1 would be a nice addition. Not a recommendation but would handle the issue.

Before I ever installed a new 110, I would upsell into a 120r, WAY better engine in general.  The 110s have a base o-ring and that would kill it for me...  no big bores with that o-ring step in place, wherein the 120r, uses a base gasket.

BOTH will have guide issues, and the 120r has too much spring, but this can be fixed.

I am but the humble tech with only experience from the early 90's. The service mgr. is in charge and made the decision on the 110 motor as 120's don't have any kind of warranty. These young pups know better than me, just ask them!

The ESP guy finally came last Tuesday and would not budge on a new reman and we ended up agreeing to rebuild the motor as a 113. Meanwhile I figured I would never get a better price on a trade as when it is there with a brand new 113 on it. and traded my FXDSE2 annie' and my 99FXSTS (Seafoam & Cream)  and brought home a new 2013 Midnight Pearl Roadglide Ultra for a total cost of $0.00.......Not a CVO though.

My first bike with a fairing and I am in love! I really loved My CVO but just couldn't do another at this time.
Best thing is no money involved so no sales tax!!!!
