Fairing vibration
« on: July 30, 2013, 02:27:42 PM »

Hey all!
o6 CVO Ultra..top LHS (from seated postion) above speaker

took outer off...no cracks, breaks, loose anything. Speaker grills tight and intact...fairing brackets solid and tight

one thing...the top LH (from seated postion) screw that holds windsheild cannot be over tightened as it "spins"..if you try to tighten too much...this can be fixed I assume with epoxy?....

...while I cannot tighten that screw as much as I would like..it seems tight.

Q...is this enough to cause this vibration?...seems to go on between 1500 and 2500 RPM...and its driving me!

Did you check your speaker brackets? If you've upgraded your speakers most of the upgraded speaker magnets are heavier than stock and can/have cause(d) the speaker brackets to crack.

The torque spec on the windshield screw is very light(not sure), if you see the edge of the fairing begin to warp while tightening-back off! I tighten mine wrist tight-no wrench. Not sure what is causing your vibration(crankshaft runout? nothing suprises me with these bikes anymore), but there is a fix for the spinning windshield bushing at your HD dealer. Parts counter should have the new and improved windshield nut. It is threaded and screws into the fairing instead of being press-fit like from factory. You can install it without removing the outer fairing if you are careful. Good luck.

I would repair the spinning windshield anchor and take it for a ride, that might be the cause.

Fairing and speaker brackets were the number one cause of fairing shake and vibration on the older bikes, so that is still the area I would look at most closely.  But you should fix the windshield nut first since you already know that isn't quite right.  I repaired the fairing and speaker brackets on my '05 with homemade patches a couple times before I finally just replaced all the brackets with a later design.  And the cracks and breaks are not always obvious, so you will need to take the time to do a detailed inspection and put your hands on everything.

I agree with Jerry, probably caused by fairing or speaker brackets.  I had the same problem on a previous bike and finally found a crack in the fairing bracket.  Was not evident on a quick inspection.  Also, I repaired windshield screw by getting a replacement from Harley.  They have a new Screw in type insert that works really well.

THANKS, EVERYONE!...

I did look carefully at the speaker bracket on that side..short of a microscope, nothing visible

will replace the insert with a screw in type

thanks again!
