Best Battery Choice for Convertable.
« on: August 03, 2013, 01:54:18 PM »

Sometime back we discussed batteries.  There were several good suggestions and thoughts.

Now that I now have 3 years on the HD stock battery I believe that a new battery is in my near future.  Lately, if it has not been on the tender it seems to hesitate when cold,  this causes the clock to reset etc.    :-*

You know someday it will suddenly be a emergency, as these things always seem to happen at the worst possible times, and I would like to be a little proactive in asking what you think would be a good choice for the convertible.   Please include why and a link if you have one.

Once again we get a thread asking for the "best" whatever.  What exactly do you mean by "best"?  Are you looking for the highest CCA, the longest life, the best price, or what?

Go to the BatteryMart website and look at their offering.  It's very competitive with the OEM in terms of performance, but about $40 less expensive.  The Harley price at MSRP is $130, the BatteryMart price is currently $88 with free shipping.

Thanks GRC.  To clarify my question.  What I mean by "best" is "your thoughtful opinion on" choosing a battery.

There are several options when purchasing a battery for the convertible,  please give your opinion of the following and/or share other options.

1.  OEM Harley Battery  - $130     needs to be on a tender all the time and lasts 3 to 5 years.

2.  BatteryMart   It's very competitive with the OEM in terms of performance, but about $40 less expensive.  the BatteryMart price is currently $88 with free shipping.

3. COPIED from a post of Lever..... "500cca  dry cell   http://www.ballisticparts.com/    alot more room in battery area"
16cell EVO 2 HD  $300         smaller - light weight- dry.

For quite some time many here have opted away from the HD branded batteries in favor of the Deka offering.  Deka is the OE for the Harley battery.  Don't remember anyone who has done so having any difficulty as a result.  I ordered an ETX30L for the old Road Glide just yesterday.  Battery in that bike is five years old and that's my limit.  It still works fine.  But sooner rather than later it won't and I'm too old and lazy to push start it if I'm out somewhere.

Hey, if I had a bionic ass with super duper strength to push start the damn bike I'd just hook up a nine volt to maintain the battery pre-sets and be done with it :huepfenlol2: !!
