110 Engine Heat

Today I tried to determine just how hot "Hot" is on my Jester. Nothing scientific but I made two runs two hours apart. Ambient temp was 90 for both runs. I used an IR detector to measure the temp. The readings were consistant on both runs. The exhaust temp  as measured directly inside of the florboard on the right side was 127 degrees. The x-over pipe was 110 degrees. Now the one that blew my mind-the bottom case just below where the jugs meet the case, read 227 degrees. I expected to have more exhaust heat and less engine heat. Maybe changing mufflers won't relieve the heat propblem as much as I had hoped they would.

Woop de doo,
Could you do me a favor and check the heat on the side of the jugs after a run. On mine at the right side of bike, even w/ the sparkplug, the rear is running at about 327 and the front at about 228. I have it at the dealer getting  the rear head gasket changed do to a small leak and they are looking into the heating problem for me. After my trip to street vibrations it got so hot that the rear 110 plate on the side of the rear head discolored to a light brown. Seems to me to be a little too hot. I would be curious to see what yours is running at.

I am doing a funeral escort today and will get some readings for you. Yesterday, on the left side rear jug right by the 110 plate, I measured 330 degress. I'll get more today.

90 degree ambient air temp here as well yesterday. Rode for about 40 minutes in regular city traffic (redlights, traffic) and checked mine with IR also. Got about 326 on the rear jug just below the head (my friends 2006 with 95ci upgrade read 296 same spot). My pipes anywhere I hit the heat shield was 110 and my exhaust (shot the beam straight into the muffler) was 496 (my friends inside exhaust was about 320). That was a run on the way to get some new V&H Oval mufflers. I have them installed now and will make another run in the same heat today and check the readings and let you know.

I made my run today and the results are not different. I ran about 18 miles of interstate at 70-75 mph, went to the bottom of the exit and did the measurements- 91 ambient, top part of rear jug was 330. Front jug was 227. Exhaust pipe was 110 degrees. It's beginning to look like the 110's are going to run ~330 on the rear jug and ~230 on the front jug. The exhaust runs 110-115. RobMay will have some more data for us after changing his mufflers..

Well if nothing else, they're consistant. I wonder how hot mine had to get to discolor the 110 I.D. plate on the rear head?

Well...... I have typed a book on this twice only to have the site in maintenance mode once and something else last night that caused it to not post so I wil try ONE MORE TIME!! :)

I rode the smurf after changing the mufflers out only No SERT or air filter or anything else at this time. The heat issue seemed better as far as general riding went. After riding 12 miles to get to the interstate at 60-65 MPH then about 6 miles on the interstate at 80-85 mph, then 15 minutes of stop and go traffic waiting to park at Destination Daytona,the temps were:

Front Cylinder - 227
Rear Cylinder - 326
Heat shield of header pipes 110 both sides
External Muffler - N/A forgot to check
Internal muffler - 596 (yes... 596)

I am going to wait as long as I can (at least until 1000 mile service) to change anything else. I will add true duals, Big Sucker or Zipper Air filter, SERT after that. I will run the rear cylinder richer than the front by a couple of ticks on the 84 map and go from there.

My 05 ultra was extremely hot when I first got it. I removed the leg farings the 2nd day I had it and never put them back on. I'l try to be more patient and wait at least thru winter this time. Id like to leave the leg farings on if I can.

I saw a Black and Orange at McQuires San Ramon, it was all apart, both heads were off,  and the service writer said there was a heat/cooling issue with the 110's. Hope thats not true.
