Fairing Shake - Broken Bracket
« on: October 20, 2006, 07:55:06 PM »

Recently started noticing that the left side of my fairing would shake back and forth pretty heavily at idle when cold (my bike idles sort of rough until fully warmed up).

Hey Jerry, evidently this is a all too common problem as both Rab and Nite-Al (two guys I ride w/ a lot) have had broken fairing brackets.  Guess all that weight of the radio/spkrs/etc. and the viberation/shaking of the big motors is gonna find the weak points.  Wish you'd shot some actual photos of the L-shaped bracket repair.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  spyder

I had the same thing happen on my 2000 FLHTC and also did a L Bracket repair. Never had another problem with it again.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
The stock brackets that are used are too thin (IMO) and not designed for the long run. I'll bet that if people with over 40K on their bikes inspected the brackets, over 50% would find that they are cracked all the way through. :o

hdnut,

It could very well be the same thing.  Mine also had a noise (more like a "chirp" than a rattle).

My fairing was squeaking and shaking more than usual when I took it in to Bumpus' for the cams, so I asked them to check it out.  The tech found a broken bracket, but there is no charge for a new on on the invoice.  I assume he fabricated something similar to what Jerry did. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I guess I'll find out when I go inside to replace the fairing mirror that I broke in MV and will have the camera handy.

The noise was also on the left side of the fairing (when sitting on the bike) on mine.

Brian, he probably just put a new bracket on and didn't chg. for it.  Let us know when you go in there.  :-/  spyder

Yeah, Spyder.  They may have turned it in on the warranty claim with the porous rear cylinder head.  Didn't think about that until you said what you said.  Although, the head shows up on there . . . . . . $370-some list price for one of those suckers! [smiley=nervous.gif]

Spyder, I've seen the photos of Darrellh's bike here on the site.  You're right, it looks great!  I thought about doing it this time . . . . . you may have just convinced me.

Who's got the Starlight Black code???
