Cylinder Base Gasket's leaking??
« on: August 12, 2013, 06:18:43 PM »

I have a 2011 CVO SG with 6900 miles on the odometer, stock motor. Saturday I noticed some oil near the base of the front and rear cylinder, only on the left side. I see it more in the rear cylinder but noticeable in the front as well. Is this normal or time for some new base gaskets?

Thanks in advance.
Erich

I wouldn't think/consider this normal... is your bike still under original warranty or do you have an ESP? Harley's (at least newer ones) aren't supposed to "mark their territory" anymore.

I bought the ESP and I'm glad I did as the original two year warranty was up yesterday!

Depending on the relationship w/your dealer (and if you choose to have them repair it) you may want to give them a call and tell them you noticed the leak on Saturday (before your original warranty expired) and ask if they can do anything for you. It's worth a stab in the dark before you have it done using the ESP and pay the deductible. :nixweiss:

Have seen it, but is not the norm.

Thanks, good idea! I want to clarify what I meant by "normal". Prior to this past weekend I had the bike out during the Northeast heat wave a few weeks ago. The bike was extremely hot and I was wondering if some seepage might be expected due to the extreme heat.

Thank you all for your replies.

My engine was just rebuilt and it leaked just like you are seeing.  The center bolt has a rubber O-ring on it.  The o ring ripped.  It is actually in a groove on the bolt  The mechanic just pulled it out and replace the bolt and o-ring.

What is the center bolt for?  Mine is doing the same thing.  Can I pull the bolt, replace the o ring and use the same bolt again?

I think it has something to do with holding the engine case's together

Working from memory here (not always a safe thing) but don't think those bolts have an o-ring per se.  Think they are what are considered "one time use" bolts that have a sealing bead on the flange of the bolt.  Does the same job as an o-ring would but is not serviceable as an o-ring would be.  Supposed to replace the bolt every time it is removed.  Just checked and it is Harley part number 895 for the case bolts.

It holds the two halves of the cases together (there are several such bolts).  The center bolt was one of the parts that leaked on the original 2007-2008 CVO110's and they were replaced under the "Product Upgrade" program at that time.  I'd suggest ordering the correct bolt and replacing it (torqued properly of course).

so just go order a new bolt,  clean up the heads and see if that cures the problem?
