Pin me
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:59:48 AM »

Been collecting the Willie G Sturgis HD pins for a few years now. Have been to the Rally every year since I acquired the Switchblade so this was year 6. Had found pins for 2009-20012 and had been looking online for the 2008 pin for the past few years. Could find several previous years but never could even find a photo of a 2008 pin so finally assumed they didn't make one.

Went to the HD display in Sturgis and was shuffled around a bit from spot to spot. These are not the annual HOG pin that you get at the HOG lounge and it took a while to find someone who understood what I was looking for but finally I was directed to the MDA booth where, for $5 I could purchase the 2013 pin. There was a nice older gent working the booth and I asked him if they made a Willie G pin for 2008. He whipped out a card with many of the previous years pins on it and there was Mr. 2008!

I was shocked to see something I had had been looking for for 4 years, something I had never even been able to find a photo of. For another $5 I now owned a pin for every year I had been to the rally.

My new best friend then told me that for $30, I could purchase 13 additional pins from previous years. My original goal had just been to purchase the pins for the years I have been at the rally but now I had the rare, limited, ultra collectors edition opportunity to own a chunk of MoCo history for the low low price of only $30!

Well, I couldn't resist. Lord knows, when I would EVER have this chance again! I had paid an average of $12 per pin for the ones I had and this score would lower the per pin average to nearly $5 so I was actually saving money!

Little did I know until I got back to the hotel and began examining my score, but the 13 additional pins were not sequential. A few years were missing between 1990 and 2007 (I was always bad at math). A quick trip to ebay and I found the missing pins. Unfortunately, a couple of them were either big Rally anniversary years or HD anniversary years so their price drove up my average a bit. It ended up costing a bit more but not quite as bad as taking the WG2 in for an oil change and riding away on a new SERG.

But, what you see below is a complete run of MoCo/Willie G pins from 1990-2013. The Willie G signature is actually visible on the pins for 11 of the last 12 years. Prior to that, they were just the annual MoCo pin for the rally. They make these for the Daytona Rally as well, but, having never attended even one of those, we won't be going down that path.

The goal is to frame them up nicely around this photo.

That's pretty cool! I've kicked myself for not collecting more memorabilia over the years, never thought about it when I could have been putting away some history, for whatever that would be worth to my survivors. At least there would be a story to tell.
