Question?
« on: August 18, 2013, 09:03:57 PM »

Just had my MC in for its 10K.  My mechanic stated that my front tire has about 2K life left in it and the back about 4K.  Why do I always wear out my front first?   :nixweiss:  I understand the rear wearing but this isn't the first time that my front wears faster than my rear.  Any answers?   :-\

Judy - do you use your front brake only a lot? I just replaced my rear tire at about 12K miles, but I'm still on my original front tire with plenty of tread left at 14K.

I hot rod a lot... so my rear tires wear out MUCH faster than my front tires ever do! It's normal for rears to wear out first though.

Maybe in slow situations Ken, but 90% of the time I grab both.

Judy that is very strange imo.  Are these the original tires and you have just 10k on the bike?  If so maybe Renae swapped tires with you, lol.

If that is not the case and you have say maybe 20k on the bike and it is having it second 10k service then did they perhaps already replace the rear tire?

I just put a front tire on my '12 last week with 24k on the bike.  The original tire was replaced at 1.5k due to damage by a road hazard so this tire had over 22k on it and still 2/32" of tread so i could have gone a little further if I wanted.

I must not use my front brake enough or maybe it is all of the wheelies that I do but I have gotten over 30,000 miles out of the front tire on my 04, (twice) and my 08.

Rear tires usually last around 11,000 miles on the older bikes. My 12 had 13,000 miles on it when I traded it in and the rear tire appeared to have a few more thousand miles left to her. My 13 CVo has 10,000 on the rear and it looks like new still!

These are the original tires with just 10K on the MC.  I'm not an aggressive rider and always let the engine RPM's do most of my slowing down. I just don't understand why I can't do better on tires.   :'( My last Harley Dunlop's got about the same mileage on tires.  And yes, I check the air pressure before every ride a keep them at 41 front / 42 Rear.  I really hate Dunlop tires!

Yeah, over-inflated on a front tire could explain it, somewhat.  That's still very strange, might want to give Dunlop a call and ask them.  They might warrenty it somewhat.  :-\ spyder

Read the sidewall on the Dunlop tire.  I keep it inflated at that cold temp.  My brother builds tire's and he says, "always follow the inflation number stamped on the sidewall."

Have you asked him about the limited mileage you are getting from the tire(s)? Like has been previously mentioned I too get way better mileage out of my Dunlops than you are getting... and some would say mine probably dry rot before they wear out but that is not true. :D :D BTW I'm using the pressures that Jerry (ultrafxr) mentioned in his post.

Understand.  But that is the maximum allowable pressure I do believe.  I always run 36 front and on the 07 with the smaller rear tire I run 40 in it and on the 12 I run 42 in the rear.  Never any problem with Dunlops except that the new 407s and 408s tend to have cupping problem.  But as far as tread wear itself, no problem.

Found this info regarding tire pressure:

NEVER INFLATE TO MAXIMUM TIRE PRESSURE!

There is a common misunderstanding that a tire's pressure is stamped on the sidewall. In actuality, this pressure stamped on a tire's sidewall is the MAXIMUM COLD PRESSURE that the tire will safely hold.

Many tires are rated for a maximum cold pressure of 44 psi, to allow the tires to be used on a wide variety of vehicles. Some vehicles may only require 30 psi cold pressure, others may require 38 psi cold pressure. In both cases, this cold pressure is less than the tire's MAXIMUM cold pressure, so the tire can safely be installed on these vehicles.

Tires should be inflated according to the manufacturer's cold specifications as described in steps 1 thru 3 above, not the maximum pressure stamped on the sidewall of the tire.

Ok Jerry and Gary.., Called my brother last night about keeping the tire inflated to what the sidewall stated and of course he laughed.  :'(.  He reminded me that he had told me "to never exceed the cold temp psi rating listed on the sidewall."   :(.  You both are correct!  I will back off 5 lbs on the front.  Thank you!   ;)
