103t's Cam Chain Tensioners at 15,000 Miles
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:05:25 PM »

Just thought I'd post some photos of the cam chain tensioners that came off my bike (2004 SEEG) at just shy of 15,000 miles.

It's funny how no two engines are the same.  I just did the 575 switch and like your's, my outside shoe showed more wear than the inside shoe.  Mine were removed at 12,000 miles.  My outside shoe looked like your pictured inside shoe and my inside shoe looked even better.  My oil pump looked good also but I went with the 575 gear driven cams, Feuling oil pump and lifters, bypass shim, and S&S adjustable pushrods and tubes.  There is no way anyone can tell me those little hunks of shoe floating around in an engine can do any good.  I think what effects the wear  rate are driving styles and how well the chain is polished.

The differences are hard to understand.  Mine came out at around 18k if I remember correctly.  The worst one didn't have another 2500 miles in it before it would've been worn through and come apart.  Was lucky mine got the work when it did.

Just curious... what did it cost to have this work done? If possible, broken down by parts/labor. Thanks!

At 24k, the inner one on my bike was starting to touch the metal bracket.  Glad I got it before it exploded.

SEUltra-
2lane and I did our cam/ drive gear swaps ourselves.

If you have a dealer just change the tensioner shoes, you are looking at 4 hours labor.

Parts From Zippers....
575 Cams
Gear Drive Cam Bearing Set
Pro-Tapered Push Rods
Oil Bypass Shim
In/Out Cam Drive Gears..... $860.12

Parts From Dealer.......
Feuling Tappets/Lifters
Feuling Oil Pump
Gaskets
Spark Plugs
Installation of above parts
Dyno Run (3.75hrs @ $62.00/hr)....$1140.00

Total cost $2000.12

I could have saved more buying Oil Pump and Tappets/Lifters from Internet, but chose to give my dealer some business as I was bringing him majority of the parts to have them installed. Dealer did give me some discount on parts to come close to what I would have saved buying all parts from Internet.

JR-
Thanks for the kind words.  I don't think I'll be opening a shop to work on someone else's though.  I definitely fall under the :  "I just know enough and have enough tools to be dangerous" category.   ::)
