I started filling out the paper work to cancell my extended warranty, After talking to a friend of mine that works in service down at an L.A. dealership, he said, that geting authorization for repairs is hard if you have a lot of changes that were not

I'm biased because I don't like or buy extended warranties on anything. You can do a lot of repairs for $1800.  I'd rather bank the money and take my chances, especially if your going to change cams.

Mike,

The biggest problem with this whole issue is the uncertainty.

Extended warranty is a separate company.  It is NOT the moco - they just contract with them.  So extended warranty only knows what the dealer tells them.  My '99 had stage II upgrade and when they replaced the cam chain tensioner (under extended warranty) at about 64k they found a stripped bolt on the case.  Wonder how that happened?  Could it have been when they installed the cams 40k earlier?  Makes one wonder.  Anyway extended warranty sent a rep by to inspect the bike and approved new crankcases.  No problem.

I had an awful lot of work done on my '99 under the extended warranty and never had the first problem.  Guess you could but I'll take a chance on that.  I just think of it as an insurance policy.

Same here...I'll keep mine.  I have the tire/wheel coverage as well, and in MV that already paid for itself with a new rear tire...didn't cost me one red cent. Another tire goes and I'm ahead.  Even if I do cams down the road, and something like the radio fries. wheel gets bent for some reason, or something else happens unrelated to the engine in any way, I figure it will pay for itself at least...I wouldn't bank the money, I'd just spend it on some trinket for the scooter...

When all this talk of cancelling the extended warranty started a couple months ago, it was right about the time I'd finished accumulating all the parts I needed for my cam swap.  I came real close to making the calls to put the wheels in motion to cancel mine, figuring once I made the modifications to the engine, the extended warranty wouldn't be worth the paper it was printed on.  Well, I never got a "round tuit" before getting the cams done, and wouldn't you know it, they discovered a porous rear cylinder head while doing the cam installation.  Thank God I didn't cancel the warranty ahead of time, or I'd be out a lot more than the $50 deductible.  The head alone was like $375 and you have to figure probably 2 hours labor to change it out, maybe less in my case since the bike was partially disassembled anyway for the cam work.

Then, while in Maggie Valley, I lost one of the oil lines that runs to the oil cooler.  The bike was in the shop there for a good 2 hours, getting the hose reattached and the oil changed.  Again, it only cost me $50 for something that probably would have been $200 otherwise.

Prior to all this, the CD player on my radio stopped working altogether and had to be replaced.  If memory serves, the refurbished unit from Radio Sound was somewhere in the neighborhood of $500, even after the core charge for the return of my radio, plus the labor to remove/reinstall.

I figure mine is coming close to paying for itself, so I have no reason to cancel it now.  Had I been denied on any of these claims, I'd no doubt be singing a different tune, and may be in the future if something happens that is not covered.  But right now, it seems to be working as advertised.

Hey Mike! [smiley=drink.gif]

First of all I think $1800 is kinda expensive for the extended warranty! I believe I paid $1300 for mine and got the wheel and tire plan too! I will try to look it up and confirm that for you. When I bought mine I shopped around after getting good advice from JC. I got a quote from Chicago HD and told my dealer if they can match or beat that price I would gladly purchase thru them....and they beat it! ;)

I was wanting to get rid of them chain drive cams and go with gear after hearing of some of the early complaints on this board. Stopped by my dealer and was asking and they recommended Andrews or Zippers. I told them Zippers was working on a cam for our 103 strokers and would probably get theirs. I asked about if this would void my warranty and they said Noooo not if we do the work. I had them do the installs and when I was up there for 103T cams the Service manager called me in his office about some little nit picken stuff I had done on my last service. A warranty problem came up because I had an item that was not on the Bike when delivered and this supposedly voided warranty on this item. I then asked him about the warranty on my cams. Next I think everyone heard me that was within one city block of his office! I told him I was told cam work would NOT void my warranty if they did the install. He asked for the person who told me that then explained THEY would bend over backwards to accommodate any warranty issues, but if I was on the road and broke down, that dealer is not obligated if he sees that additional work has been done to the area of failure.

My dealer was determined to make it right. Asked me what he could do. I asked about refunding my money on warranty for starters. He said it would be pro rated even though the extended warranty hasn't kicked in yet. Ended up offering $1000 of the $1300 I paid. I figured I plan on keeping this bike and if a stator goes out or a tire, wheel, or any sensors need replaced, will I would make up for the $1000 and it's already paid for. So I kept the warranty. Some others may choose to take the money and run.....I didn't. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Would I have done all this work knowing it screwed up my warranty? I don't know, it's hard to say now that I'm use to this extra power and ride. But, before I felt that extra power I was perfectly happy with the bikes performance. I just wanted to eliminate cam chain tensioners and get a little better low end torque.

So, basically what I was told, any modifications, especially any Screamin eagle race products automatically voids warranty because it is for racing! I believe it's in small print on your extended warranty contract. They want to sell you this warranty and take your money for it and the modifications then turn around and say, Sorry your modifications void extended warranty. Know what your getting into before you decide to have it done! Then decide if it's worth it to you. Since mine is done already I have a hard time getting the smile off my face everytime I get off my bike. But I haven't had any problems yet and I have around 8000 miles on these cams. Good Luck and God Bless!

My voltage regulator went out in August and I limped into Low Country H-D in Charleston, SC, for repair.

Another thing to keep in mind is that extened warranty repairs do not have to be done by the dealer. I know that RC Cycles told me that they are a repair facility for the extended warranty. So things are a little different when it comes time for repairs. I have the warranty & plan on keeping it, I figure it will more than likely pay for itself in the long run with the tire coverage alone. Just my .02

GasRat Good point! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I just found out there is an independent shop here that is a HD certified technician and ext warranty dealer. He also services all the county sheriffs bikes which are HD.

I'm sticking with mine, I have a good dealer and they sold it to me.  If it turns to crap I think I can make them eat it.  They have done all the service and mods to my bike.
