2014 CAN bus?
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:47:53 AM »

If the new bikes are a CAN bus system will ya have to install modules for stuff like heated gear, bright ass taillights, moto lights, race tuners, etc??

BMW are canbus. I wire my heated clothing socket and battery tender direct to the battery terminals. The BMW cigar socket powers down after the ignition is switched off. Harley may do it another way?

Communication protocols are usually used in electronic devices. Lights, heated gear, etc would not use it. You should be able to connect any of these things without concern.

Can bus shouldn't care about 12 volt stuff that draws accessory or direct battery power.  Not sure why the MoCo moved to it.   It might be a little cheaper for them, it might be to do with all of the new switches on the bars, or it might be about future plug in emissions testing and OBD 2 compliance.

CANBUS is an acronym for Controller Area Network Bus, originally developed by Bosch... the same company that also developed the first O2 sensors, BTW...

CANBUS enables the manufacturer to greatly simplify the wiring harnesses for electronic components, which can reduce costs and improve the reliability of the system. They don't have to run individual wires to carry discrete signals from each switch to the component to be controlled. CANBUS is a message-based system, which we've been using in computer systems for decades. Harley is finally catching up to this system. It eliminates most of the point-to-point wiring because everything goes over a high-speed data bus. Messages are sent from, say, a switch component, to a cruise control component, telling it to do something... instead of a signal being sent over a dedicated wire between the switch and the controlled device.

CANBUS vehicles have a LOT less wiring than older point-to-point discrete vehicles like pre-2011 Softails, and pre-2014 Touring bikes.

Think of it as a kind of Local Area Network on your bike... on which all of the components and switches "talk" over common wiring.

This is obviously a step forward Ken.  Mother Harley has been behind the curve here for a long time and had, quite literally, run out of space in some areas to stuff more wire.  Many more options are open now that could not have been before.  And it is like a LAN on the bike.  Which means if the Cylons ever come all the guys with new bikes are screwed and all of us with Galactica era bikes will keep right on keeping on.

(Sorry, geek moment, couldn't help it.  If you don't know the story, well... felderkarb....)

LOL! Well, hopefully Mother Harley has set it up to ignore all Cylon messages! But Honey Badger STILL Won't Care!

I'm still wondering what those 5 remaining switches on the fairing skirt will all end up being used for...

The Hog Chapter's Road Captain's will add enough lights and horns to fill up all those switch spots. LOL Do you wonder why the 2014 bikes with the passing lamp switch on the left side of the dash has shiny blanks and the right side has a dull finish.

With the tighter integration of the head unit, it's multiple display and interface capabilities and the entire system's integration via bluetooth your cell phone those are the one time use buttons for the soon the announced SE Road Side Assistance package.  You can push each button one time to automatically request a tow.  Each kit will give you five tows (one for each button).  Fortunately there will be refill kits available..

The CAN bus system does make a difference to what you can plug in or tap of other electrical components, it will shut down circuits that are overloaded or that the system think is overloaded.  If you are adding extra stuff, tap directly in to the battery, preferable with a PDM 60 in between.
