Backfiring and ticking from around the cam cover
« on: September 02, 2013, 02:59:22 PM »

I have a little over 60k on my 2010 Limited with 40K on a 113 rebuild with 259e cams and high compression pistons..the bike started a strange ticking sound around 2k miles ago which I now believe is from around the cam cover.....today it started popping on slight decel and and got progressively getting louder and more pronounced during a 200 mile ride.

Does anyone have have any thoughts on how best to trouble shoot this?

One HD mechanic suggested to put it on the dyno and retune....I have concerns that I should check some mechanical items first before reeving it up on the dyno.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ticking from around the cam cover is likely a lifter going bad... I would check that out before I started it again!

Ignore that mechanic and do some checking of the valve train.  Your symptoms sound an awful lot like those described by many others right before they had a lifter fail and tear up the engine.

I hope the guy isn't a friend of yours, because he's a dumb ass.  The tune on the bike doesn't go "bad".  Something mechanical on the bike is going bad, and as Ken said, the first thing to check is the lifters...and I'd do it real quick like if you value the other parts in the engine.  It might even be something much simpler, like a loose exhaust header, but you probably won't be that fortunate.

If you have adjustable pushrods, loosen them up and remove the lifters, if no adjustable pushrods it's a little more involved to pull the lifters but once you remove a lifter you can examine it for spalling, galling, discolortation, etc on the roller and any signs of damage to the roller axle/bearing assembly.

I check the easy stuff first....popping on decal, getting louder, strange ticking, could be lifters, but I would check the exhaust flange nuts first. They can make a strange noise when they back off.

From what I am reading here noting the mileage on the build, I would be checking the cam chain tensioner. If the pad is gone you got metal on metal and that could make the sounds he is describing. Maybe the backfiring is a secondary issue from cam timing with a loose chain?

My old Heritage was making strange noises.  I checked the primary but it was OK.  Turned out to be the cam bearings.
Take off the cam cover and look for metal particles.

Check the lifters....seemed ok...but replaced anyway with fueling lifter....Still making noise and popping on decel.

Just a thought....if the cam chain tensioner malfunctions....could that cause the timing to go off during decel which causes the popping?

Did you bother to check for exhaust leaks?  Air leaks can sound like ticking valves, and they will cause decal popping as well.

Check for cracks in the exhaust as well as loose connections...

OK Brothers.....exhaust leak

Took the heat shields off to check for cracks and was then able to feel the leak.

I am thinking that the shield was masking the leak.

I really appreciate everyones comments.
