My experience : Hydraulic slipping clutch, history and solution
« on: September 05, 2013, 02:11:23 PM »

In April '13, the clutch on my '08 CVO (30,000 kms) begins to slip when the engine is hot.
He began to slip at a constant speed, between 2500 and 3000 rpm.
At first, I thought my clutch was worn.

I replace it with a SE kit # CLUTCH DIAPHRAGM SPRING # 37951-98 and 37980-10 PERFORMANCE CLUTCH PLATES.
But slipping is always present.

I check my oil level of the gearbox: too high!
I remove oil.
Slipping is always present.

I change the clutch fluid with full bleed (fresh, new DOT4).
Slipping is always present.

I control the length of the axial movement of the push rod : 2 mm, perfect!

Today I removed the housing hydraulic clutch and you have more on the following pictures with my comments.

Like you see on the pic, there is a "thick and sticky grease" on the cylinder

Other problem : the surface treatment is deteriorated

We can see on the left side (on the pic) : wear treatment

My hydraulic fluid is DOT 4.
My Gearbox oil is Heavy shockproof REDLINE.

Questions :

Are these oils compatible for the hydraulic actuator ?

Why this wear on the treatement ?

Thanks for your reviews.

Sure I need a service kit 36822-04 and the the end of this story in fews days  :drink:

By the derby cover, (left side of the bike on the primary chaincase cover) with a caliper :
"Actuate the clutch lever to measure the axial movement of the push rod and the clutch release plate assembly. The axial movement needs to be at least 0.065 in. (1,65 mm).
Proper bleeding of the system will typically yield plate movement of greater than .065 in.  If clutch release plate movement is less than .065 in. , the system must be re-bled "

Jacques, I have cleaned that piston on a couple bikes when it seemed to be getting sticky.  Have had to replace it one other time when the surface had started to degrade.  So it's not a completely unknown problem.  Honestly there are probably several riders who don't notice a slight bit of problem and ride with it for a long time.

Thanks, and forgive my ignorance but I hate that I have a friction zone near the end of lever travel...I would really like it to be in the middle of lever travel and was hoping I could do something about this.  My system has been bled several times once by me and then the dealer.  There has been no change in the location of the friction zone.

So you did not adjust something in the clutch basket, just bled and measured.  I was hoping there was something you did that could help adjust my friction zne location.

There isn't any adjustment Bill.  It's down close the end because that's where the hydraulics back off.  No way to change it at all.

I thought he found a workaround, Stoopid non-adjustable design!

Dang it, thought there was new a "trick" to learn (re: Hyd Clutch) and possible adjustment. Oh well, happy with hydraulic clutch, just be nice to tweak the friction zone.  :)

Good day,
I have just started having the same issue with my 2008 FLHTCUSE, 30800 miles. Changes the clutches and spring plate, old clutches seemed to be good. Was that the slave piston you cleaned? Replaced?

Slave cylinder aka actuator.  Harley sells a repair kit, part number 36822-04 Slave Cylinder Kit , $39.95 MSRP.
