I have a 2009 FLHTCUSE4 with over 40,000 miles. I have always had the bike serviced regularly, changing the oil every 5,000 miles, always used HD Syn3 20-50w. I constantly check to oil on long trips to ensure that it is at the proper level.
I was coming back from Milwaukee and the 110th anniversary. I had ridden the bike out from Washington State, the bike was running well and I was traveling back along Hwy2, was about 3,800 miles into this trip. I stopped in North Dakota for a break and noticed a chirping sound coming from the engine at idle. I checked the oil, it was slightly above the half way mark, no problem. I continued on my way, with the chirping occurring only at idle, not under power. I made my way into Billings, Mt and stopped at the HD dealer to have them check out the chirping noise. The dealer got me into the shop and started to check out the bike, they pulled the oil filter and cut it open, it was full of metal shavings. Needless to say I was lucky to make it as far as I did. The dealer discussed options with me and I decided to have the motor pulled and sent back to HD for remanufacture. the dealer provided assistance in finding accommodations and transportation home (600 miles). So I am riding a cage for a while.
the interesting point of this adventure is that the motor was running strong, getting good fuel milage (40+) all the while eating its self. So be aware of how your ride sounds and immediately have any un-usual noises investigated.
