How low can you go?? Oil Temp that is!
« on: September 12, 2013, 09:23:47 AM »

The bike is a '08 FLHRSE4 and I have been "playing with tuning" for a while now. I know a "real tune" would probably be the way to go, but I enjoy the challenge of play around with it. I have a SERT and have been adjusting to get the oil temp down. When I first got the bike and took it out the oil temp hit 280 + and believe me, it was HOT! With the adjusting I have done to date, it is consistently around 230-235 max. However, it still goes into hi temp mode when stopped at signals, etc. The transition out of hi temp mode is very smooth and doesn't cause any issues, but I have read that some of you have been able to stop going into that mode totally with tuning. I know you can turn it off, but really don't want to do that. The bike runs great, good power throughout the range, no popping or any problems with any other issues. I have adjusted, the AFR in the idle range to 12-12.5 and have increased the levels in the idle range in the VE tables. Should I go higher in the VE tables or??? Any ideas would be appreciated.  :)

How are you measuring the oil temps?  What mods have been done to your bike?  I'm no tuning expert but someone here will be able to help you out.

You should ask Jerry, (grc) he loves oil temp questions.   :2vrolijk_21:

The next place is timing.  Advancing the timing 4-5 in the idle area might help.   What tuner do you have?   Might want to look at close throttle spark table.

Fact is there is no way to keep an air cooled engine from overheating without airflow.
In other words parade duty will ALWAYS cause overheating if left in this state of operation long enough.
No amount of fuel or timing will prevent overheating in stagnate air. Just the nature of the beast.
By adjusting fuel and timing you can lengthen the time it takes to get to an overheated state...but most of the time the difference with a properly tuned bike is very short.
Tuning is the answer,

Only mods have been supertrapp SE mufflers and the SE air filter. Oil temp is measured with the HD digital oil level/temp unit which I have checked the calibration in boiling water with a calibrated temp gauge and it was spot on. At least at 212 degrees. Since I'm essentially at sea level that should be good.

I'll try the timing and see if it helps, I haven't done that yet.

I also recognize that parade mode will kick in eventually if you sit long enough. I'm just trying to stretch the time out. Right now it takes 3-5 minutes of sitting to first go into parade mode (this is after riding for awhile) the next stop it goes into parade mode after about 1-2 minutes.

Looking at various recordings I have made shows head temp of 270-280 when cruising ramping up to 310-320 when it is in parade mode.

I think I will also kick up the VE Tables a bit more and see what happens.

keep in mind that if you have no feedback to tell you what the afr actually is, adjusting the VE table and/or afr table is nothing more than adding or decreasing fuel (meaning very general, and you can reach excessive without knowing).  This applies to calibrations that have not been airflow mapped.  If you have your VE tables dialed in to the afr table, then that is a different topic.  It sounds to me like you are blindly adjusting both though.

Mayor,
I did a bunch of smart tunes that I thought would tie the VE Tables to the AFR table. I got to minimal variation between smart tunes. Then I adjusted the AFR Tables to what I thought would work based on reading numerous publications and forums. I agree I do not have direct feedback with measuring "out the pipe" but without getting into the tuning business it's the best I can do. As I indicated earlier, the bike runs great, much stronger from when I got it, meatier sound from the pipes, very smooth power and no popping no matter what I do throttle wise.

I did blend the VE Tables since not every box was hit, but I think that is ok.
