Oil Change Question
« on: September 12, 2013, 02:24:52 PM »

Not sure if this is in the right section, but how many of you add exactly what the manual says is the most that should be added, or do you put in a bit less when doing an oil change.  I am finding that some oil seems to come out of the filler cap when I am on longer rides. I added the 3.5 quarts when I changed it last, so I am guessing that I should add a little less next time??

The amount specified in the manual on a Harley never seems to correlate with the real world, and it is always best to start out by adding from 1/2 to a full quart less, run the engine 30-60 seconds to fill the filter, then adjust the actual oil level using the dipstick.  If the dipstick has a separate FULL line for hot and cold, fill until the level is slightly below the cold FULL mark.  If the dipstick doesn't have a separate cold FULL mark, leave the oil level about halfway between ADD and FULL and ride the bike far enough to get the oil up to full operating temperature (probably 10-20 miles), then check the level with the dipstick and adjust the level to slightly below the FULL line.   NEVER OVERFILL!

The amount listed in the manual is how much it holds (either with or without a filter change) and unless you could drain the entire system dry during each oil change, some of the old oil will still be in the system.  If you are filling the oil tank with what's listed in your manual, you are probably overfilling and it's why you are getting the blow-back out the filler cap.

I always try to put back what I drain out.  As an example, if I drain out 3 quarts, I put that much back and check.  If it needs more, add at that point.  How do I know how much I drain out?  I keep empty quart oil containers handy for disposing of my old oil.  I fill each empty with the drained oil and thererfore have a pretty good idea how much came out and have a good way to keep it until I properly dispose of it.... :2vrolijk_21:

Dobeman, when you use your turkey baster put some clear plastic tubing over the end. If it is hard to slip on get the tubing hot in some boiling water and it should slide on then as it cools you will have a nice fit. I have a couple like that for when I make a mistake and overfill something.CAHDBIKER

At my 1,000 mile service on my 14 FLHTKSE I took off the Ventilator air filter.  The filter had oil pooled up in it and it ran off the backing plate and onto the cam cover and center case.  My Road Glide Ultra does the same thing with Syn3.  At the suggestion of a carer HD mechanic, I changed to Amsoil 60wt at 3.5 quarts.  On the Road Glide I made an almost 5,000 mile round trip to Sturgis and not one drop leaked out.  He told me the Syn3 is the thinnest 20/50 he has ever seen and that it blows out the vents at an alarming rate.  What he told me to do worked and I'll be using either the Amsoil 60wt or the Redline 20/60 from now on.

I just took off my air filter to check it and fortunately this had not happened (have since removed some oil with the turkey baster), but will definatley keep the amsoil in mind.

Did he actually measure the viscosity and find it to be lower than the requirement for a 50 weight motor oil, or was he just flapping his gums with no facts as is often the case with so-called Harley "techs"?  The real reason your change resulted in a difference in carryover was the 3.5 quarts versus the 4.0+ quarts it most likely had in it originally.

Amazing how many harley "techs" are also Chemical engineers. And how many riders believe them.
