At my 1,000 mile service on my 14 FLHTKSE I took off the Ventilator air filter.  The filter had oil pooled up in it and it ran off the backing plate and onto the cam cover and center case.  My Road Glide Ultra does the same thing with Syn3.  At the suggestion of a carer HD mechanic, I changed to Amsoil 60wt at 3.5 quarts.  On the Road Glide I made an almost 5,000 mile round trip to Sturgis and not one drop leaked out.  He told me the Syn3 is the thinnest 20/50 he has ever seen and that it blows out the vents at an alarming rate.  What he told me to do worked and I'll be using either the Amsoil 60wt or the Redline 20/60 from now on.

He told you that Syn3 was the "thinnest" 20/50 oil he has ever seen?   That statement in itself proves that the mechanic is an idiot and know nothing about what viscosity means.
That's absolutely ridiculous.

Don't kill the messenger, I'm just relating what he told me.  I know nothing about the subject.

No bro, just giving you the heads up that now anything he says is subject to question.  It's always best to have confidence in your mechanic but when they say something like that, I get scared to let them touch my bike.  Nothing personal towards you. JMHO

That's why those of us who do know something about the subject responded to your post.  Not trying to kill the messenger, just attempting to enlighten you and anyone else reading this thread who may not know much about the subject.

If you ride in extremely hot weather all the time then running 60 weight is fine; even Harley says so in their manuals.  But I'd stick to the multigrade version if you plan to ride in areas where the temps dip significantly, like the mountains.  A good multigrade (20w60 for instance) protects better on cold starts than a straight 50 or 60.

The carryover of oil into the air cleaner is a longstanding problem with Harley, and it isn't caused by the brand of oil.  Experience has taught many of us that running the oil level a pint below the full mark will usually take care of the problem.
