Bitubo shocks for my new 2014? Suggestions please.
« on: September 13, 2013, 09:23:57 AM »

The stock rear shocks on this 2014 have to go. The new 2014 forks works so much better it just makes the OEM rear shocks seem even worse than before.
I'm all done with oil spewing 440s. Will not do anything with air.  I don't mind digging in the wallet if the quality is there.
Are the Bitubos still the top shelf? All suggestions and comments welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks!

I've had them on two bikes and love them.  Changed from 440s to Bitubos on the first bike. LOL  There may be some others that are close to or as good as Bitubos, but once I rode with the Bitubos I haven't found a reason to try anything else.

Has anything changed on the back of the new bags to cause fitment issues?

Steve,

there are numerous choice.  I have not had the Bi's but I have had Ohlin's and recently JRI's. They are both excellent quality shocks and great results.   Both of those are sold by Howard Messner of Motorcycle Metal.  Extremely knowledgable and a great guy.  He is on the forum here.

I would get the Bitubo's from Dan at Traxxion even though I don't have them (Works Performance).

The only problem with the Bitubo's is that they don't always have them in stock and you could be waiting a month depending on their order cycle.  He will let you try them for a couple of weeks also..

Get the 13" 330mm..

Also as suggested, the JRI shocks from what I have read are 1st rate shocks and American made.

I am getting along fine with the Work's (have had for several years) and coming from 440's are world beaters.  I just know quality wise, the Bitubo's and JRI's are better (but cost more too)..

Brian has told me how good the Bitubo's are but am tired of spending money as sometimes you don't know how much better they are from what you have for the price difference.

Same old stuff on the back of the 2014, no fitment issues.
Thanks for the input everyone!

Steve

FWIW:  I've got Ricor on the 02 SERK, WORKS on the 08 SERK and Bitubo 300mm on the 11 SESG.

The WORKS and the Bitubos are pretty much equal once both are dialed in.  My problem with the Bitubos is it takes a while to find the sweet spot with all their adjustments.  Then you add a passenger which means more adjustments.  Pack heavy more adjustments.

I got my Bitubos uses at a good price.  Depending on the cost factor either will work very well.  However, a big pot hole or pavement heave is still going to let you know it is there.  To me it's like Traxxion Dynamics vs Monotube.  There is a difference but there's also a cost vs performance issue.

I spoke with Dan at Traxxion today about suspension upgrades on my SEUC. He suggested a Bitubo that I had not seen mentioned here, it is a WME version that has no external reservoir but retains 95% of the performance of the WMT version. Still adjustable pre-load and rebound. It is also less expensive and eliminates all the fitment issues and bag rubbing with the external reservoir plus they're nice and shiny! I ordered a set and plan on having them installed when I get the AK-20's done in a few weeks. Fortunately for me, Traxxion is local, about 40 miles away, so I will ride in, have the work done, and ride back out in a few hours. Looking forward to a smoother ride!

Let us know how the rear shocks work out.  One reason for not using the Bitubo's is the clearance issue with the reservoirs and saddlebag lock wire connectors as well as my Bushtec hitch.  I would have none of these issues with this model bitubo..

I ordered set with reservoirs today from Dan. He did mention potential clearance issues.
The 2014 has all new bag mounts ect in the rear. No one knows if it has more room, less or the same? Guess I'll be the first to know.
He said no issues exchanging them for the new non reservoir shock if I have issues. The non reservoir shocks have no compression adjustment
and are 250.00 less money.

I had Ohlins on my FLHTK, and I now have JRIs on my CVO.  They're both outstanding shocks, with a slight nod to the JRIs thanks to their longer stroke (92mm versus 77mm).  I've had nothing but excellent support and service from Howard at Motorcycle Metal.

I put Penske's on my 2012 SESG from Traxxion Dynamics along with the AK-20's. Monetarily very expensive but it is by far the best money I've spent on the bike to date. The Penske's were built for my weight & riding style with a internal separating piston so there is no external canister & no emulsification of the oil which eliminated any fitment issues with possibly rubbing the bags. Bottom line is that I like them very much & have no regrets at all, totally different ride now. :2vrolijk_21:
