Belt broke & dropped it loading it onto the trailer
« on: September 15, 2013, 04:38:24 PM »

My heart sank when I realized that my bike was going on its side & there was nothing I could do. The belt broke (5K miles Falcon SPC) so I called my wife to come get me. I got my Durango & Kendon stand up trailer & went to go get it. The flth's are heavy. I had a friend help me & as we were pushing it up the ramp (the handle bars seemed to want to turn & it went up on the track & over it went. Glad I had some help there to get it back upright. Cracked the tour pack & scratched the front fender is all that I have found so far. My daughter has the camera & I don't think my phone will get a good enough pic but will try it.  Now to decide if a 136T belt from gates will work or get a HD belt. $225.00 vs $110.00.
Have done search's & found a lot on the Falcon breaking, too bad I did not see those before I got it & I did the search's.

Are you saying you had only 5k on that belt before it broke?   :confused5:

Yes 5,000 miles on it & it broke. I have read that their are some that did not make 1,000 & the Falcon broke.

No personal opinions here...just typing the truth and asking a real question...why did you change out the belt :nixweiss:

I would guess yes.
Once the "Trust fund Baby" receives that monthly payment from mommie and daddy he can come.

Sorry to hear of the damage. Just a thought for the future. No way I could push my bike up my bike trailer even with a low profile ramp. I have a small winch mounted in the nose and use straps around the floorboards if needed.

The last time I towed my bike was due to a belt breaking with a few thousand miles on her on a July 4 ride.  It was also a Falcon belt due to changing the front sprocket.  This is what I have learned while towing heavy objects with my 8x8 snowmobile trailer.  I use home made ramps that latch together from underneath to prevent them from spreading out causing a potential nightmare.  Their is also a hook system to keep the ramps from moving.  The bikes are heavy and once started if you don't make it the first time you may not get a second chance.  I'm now in the process of mounting a wench with long remote controls.  This allows me to hold the bike straight up and have my wife use the controls to the wench as I guide her in the Wheeldock that is mounted to the trailer floor.  Very safe & simple.  I'm currently painting my large swingarm that mounts to a wooden column in the garage with the wench mounted.  It will be a big help in lifting and placing items on work tables with wheels etc.  A wench can be purchased pretty reasonably on Craig's list and is always available when your buddies are out riding.  Funny how I only think of making things easier as I get older, could have used some brains when I was younger!  Seriously a lot of us take towing to lightly, causing damage to the bike and sometimes personal injury.  Glad you are OK.

Hate to hear of anyone messing up their scoot on the other hand...

A Gates engineer told me that Gates made the belts for HD

Read somewhere recently (but can't remember the cite, dammit) that much of the metal stamping was now also no longer in-house.  Before this stampings and frames were about the only things that didn't come from an outside supplier.  If the metal parts are beginning to be farmed out Harley will soon be close to being an assembler not wholly unlike many here have been.  Have MSO will travel....

I know, much of the auto industry is the same way.  But it's still a far cry from the idea Harley likes to portray.
