Zumo 660 differences???????????
« on: September 20, 2013, 10:45:04 AM »

I'm sure some of you guys got the answer!?!?!  What are the differences between the Zumo 660 Automobile & the Motorcycle version? Of course the price, motorcycle version is about 3X higher & waterproof. There must be more to it than that, tell me PLEASE.

There is no automobile version of the Zumo 660. It is a motorcycle GPS which you can also use in your automobile. The Harley Road Tech 660 is the same GPS the Zumo 660. The Road Tech comes with a 2 year warranty versus a 1 year for the Zumo, Orange and Black colors has the Harley dealers preloaded and will work with the Harley Navigation Interface Module (NIM). Buying the Road Tech from a 20% discount dealer with free shipping and you will pay close to if not less then the Zumo 660. It is a great GPS for your bike. Upgrade it to the 665 and you will have XM radio and weather and traffic alerts. :orange:

I am currently on a trip in the Midwest and take my RT 665 everywhere I go. Works great and when I have some extra time, it's easy to find the HD dealers to go buy a shirt..

I have been looking at adding the 665 this winter. Are you saying in addition to the $709 665 Zumo (that's the LSHD1 price) I have to purchase the Harley Nav Interface module?

If you want the unit to give audible directions through the HK stereo by interrupting the output of the radio, yes.  You'll also have to do some wiring.  There's several threads on here about how to get this done.  HD says it can't be done, but they are wrong.

The alternative is to run the GPS output into the AUX input on the front of the radio.  You can also install a AUX input jack on the back of the radio if you don't want the wire hanging in the front. But, you'll have to have the radio set to AUX to hear whatever is coming out of the GPS, whether directions or MP3 music...or in the case of the 665, XM as well.

Midnight I would prefer not to occupy the aux port. Can you lead me to a thread with an install of the Zumo and module? I installed and wired my own handlebars so I should be able to handle it.

Here's one:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=66425.0

In the search box at the top of the page, type in NIM and you'll get even more results to wade through.

One more thing ......they are UV resistant.  You can buy the zumo 660 and then load the HD dealers into it.  I have the 550 and love it had it for 5 years or 75K miles.  660 is nice if your going with xm that route.

Be aware that if you have a 665 you need to use the Auxilliary Input to be able to hear the XM Radio via the GPS. If you want to listen to MP3 files you install on a micro SD card and insert into the GPS you must use the Auxiliary Input, this is also true for weather and traffic alerts via the GPS. This is also true for MP3 if you have the 660.

The NIM only works for turn prompts not the audio outputs via the GPS mentioned above.

So that really kind of defeats the whole purpose for me then. Is having turn prompts come through the speakers without the AUX plugged in the only real benefit?  :nixweiss:

It is the only benefit of having the NIM. That is the way the NIM is designed, it will only pass turn prompts all other audio outputs from the GPS (MP3, XM, Phone Calls, Traffic and Weather Alerts) has to go through the Auxiliary Input port on the radio. If your radio is in the AUX mode then the NIM becomes redundant as all audio including the turn prompts will go through the Auxiliary Input.

I'd definitely route the aux through the back of the radio. Very glad I did. Time consuming, but no wires dangling from GPS to head unit and you can keep the rubber water protector plugged in the front aux input. Theres a step by step thread I followed from the site. If you're leary about cutting into PCB board on radio (which I was) you can have Iron Cross do it for you. I figured if I f'd it up, I'd send it to them to fix.

How to install aux input thread
