Extended Warranty Question
« on: October 31, 2006, 06:21:42 PM »

OK

another spin on this same question....
one of my folks at work rides an 05 Softtail Deluxe ( its a requirement to own a Harley to be in my unit  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif])
anyway, he was looking into buying an extended warranty as his factory warranty is about up.
Both the local dealer and the MoCo told him that since his selling dealer did a stage II and big bore kit that an extended warranty would not apply and oh, by the way, his factory warranty was null and void the minute he bought his bike 2 years ago...

any of you guys wanna weigh in?  doesnt make sense to me

Every dealer I've ever chatted with about the extended warranty said you can purchase it anytime within 30 days and 1000 miles.  Then they tell you you can't purchase it after that.  BUT, I thought I'd remembered getting a note about buying one after we bought her SERG a couple of years ago. I got mine when I bought my Banana but I thought they said I can purchase anytime, as long as original warranty doesn't run out. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Yes, that is what I was told also. Anytime before the bike went out of the original warranty but it did not kick in until the expiration of that original. So I asked why should you hold the money for two years and they said it doesn't make sense do it? I bought my SEEG used with very few miles on her and went into the dealer to buy the ext. warranty and they told me to wait until near the end of the original.

Actually  it is  90 days or 600 miles to avoid a $150.00 surcharge

I just signed up for the 7 year plan  (note you do not have to buy it from the dealer who sold the bike)

That is not how I understand it unless you use non-Harley Parts

Sounds like it would be a waste of money unless you can find a dealer who would make a reasonable attempt to honor the warranty.  I bought one with my SERK.  It was most likely a waste of money since in my experience they usually try to find a way to not cover it.

A good dealer will work on getting the warranty covered.

Bottom line though - Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, an act of Congress in 1975 to protect consumers.
Read it, understand it and be an informed consumer.

That said I think you really have to judge the value based on the bike.

Buy an 883 Sportster with no sophisticated "stuff" and most of the extended coverage is wasted.

Buy a loaded Ultra classic with ABS and all and the perceived value of the SC raises.
