This morning I received the news that one of my former student workers was murdered on Monday in Atlanta.  Hearing this news devastated me.  Joci was not just a student worker, she was a friend.  She was originally from Oregon and came here for a degree in Early Childhood Education.  She left Shorter after two years to complete her degree at a state school due to finances.  Despite leaving, she kept in touch!  She sent out an email in June excited about her "new house."  She rode motorcycles, coached cheerleading, and made everyone around her smile!  She came by Shorter once a semester just to catch up and go to lunch.  I cannot believe this has happened.  She is 12 years younger than me and encouraged me to buy my bike!  She loved motorcycles and was your typical "tomboy!"  I know it's not related to the site, but I know her family needs your thoughts and prayers.  Her mom and sister are coming from Oregon to "collect her body."  Her dad will be coming back in a few weeks to clean out her house.  I cannot imagine the trauma and stress they are going through right now.  All because she chose to date a controlling, jealous guy!  I hope - if nothing else - this event speaks to young women in the Atlanta area and makes them think twice when their boyfriend becomes too possessive, controlling or jealous.

You and your friends family will be in my prayers. Through this difficult time, I suggest that you do what has been suggested to me....provide support to those in need and be willing to accept support from your friends. I wish that I could tell you more. Hang in there.

            Sorry if I have not posted something here earlier. Words fail when tears fall. I have tried 10 times to post something and choked up every time. My most heartfelt condolences to everyone close to this poor child.

I know Mrs We is great with Google and maybe she can help here. I remember a poem that goes something like this  " Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep "  
It goes on the express how the person being grieved for is everywhere in everything around those who mourn and they should not be sad.

Her funeral will be held in Oregon on Monday.  Her friends will hold a memorial at the coffee shop she worked at part-time on Sunday.  I think I'll frame the photo with that poem underneath it to sit on the counter.  

I still cry every time I think about it.  I just cannot imagine the shock and agony or instant pain that she experienced.  How can you be enjoying a dinner with a friend in a public restaurant and someone just walk in and stab you???   I cannot imagine the trauma that the other customers experienced by witnessing such a brutal act.  I imagine they'll be reliving that nightmare for a while!  As MtnCop said, all you can do is offer support and accept it when needed.  All I want to do is remember a beautiful young girl with a beautiful heart and beautiful smile.  This weekend is Alumni weekend.  My other student workers will be here.  Seeing them without her will be tough!!  SHE SHOULD BE HERE!!!!  God help that poor boy's soul because that's his only hope!!

Thank you all for your encouragement.  Pray, pray, pray for her family.  Particularly her dad as he comes back next week to pack up her house.  That will be hard!

I am very sorry for your loss. Our prayers will be with you and her family.
Please don't beat yourself up over not being there for her. Most people have a public image and it may be different from their true private selves.You can try to get "inside" a person but until they are ready to reveal it you will never know what someone is truly going through. All you really can do is be there when you can for them.
Those who have gone through combat or who have seen a life taken can appreciate how fragile life is and will want to live life to the fullest. I believe we can live on not only in an after life but in those peoples lives we have touched both good or bad.
Maybe you could help the memory of your friend live on by setting up a scholarship fund or award in her name at the school?
I know the parents are going through the hardest thing they are ever going to have to do in their lives. It is the worst trauma to have to loose a child, it is not the natural order to life.
One thing that I bet many of us will do is to hug our families and freinds and let them know how much they mean to us and not take them for granted.
