Spark plug knock
« on: October 02, 2013, 11:44:28 AM »

Bought my 09 cvo with 8 k on it . Ran perfect, did 10 k service, immediately started knocking between 2-4k rpm, have replaced head pipe with v&h X pipe have V&H megaphone exhaust, did full dyno tune, was quiet for about 75 miles then it came back. My extended warranty has expired , not sure where to turn next. Any ideas?

Take it back to your tuner.

It started having detonation noises (that's what you mean by "knocking"?) immediately after the 10k service but but before the installation of the pipes and other parts and the dyno tune?  Can't tell by your description what happened in what order.

If the problem began immediately after the 10k service but before the other work was done you already screwed the pooch.  Should have sorted out one problem before adding a ton of variables.  No single obvious point of failure or poor service so you're paying someone to look over everyone else's work.

If the issues began after all the work was done then it's obvious what you do next.  Check the potentially obvious things that might play a role like intake or other leaks then, if you find nothing, take it back to the tuner and tell him he's got your bike pinging like a popcorn cooker full of ball bearings and he needs to produce a better tune.

i put the V-rod plug in mine the 10R plug vs the 6R plug and it eliminate the ping.  V-rod plug is a colder plug.

Not all.  The knock sensing system shouldn't be constantly retarding spark if everything else is as it should be, and if it was necessary to turn it back on to eliminate more than very minor and occasional detonation then the tune itself is suspect.

One of the fourm members just had his engine replaced due to the lifter had "let go", but before that happened he mentioned that the bike ran rough.  Just my $.02

if your bike has a tuning system in which you can record data, you should do some data recordings to try to capture the knock retard event.  You may be hearing mechanical noises and assume that it is knock when it is not.
