I have a similar problem on an '04 fatboy I recently acquired, however it is the black coming off the engine. I assume it could be repaired the same way. Has anyone done the black? What did you use for paint? Does harley have a $23 can in my future??

Harley does sell black spray paint for the engine.

Harley sells a touch up for the engine , its black and works well, I had some about 15 years ago. It was in a samll bottle

I just held the cone in front of the nozzle as I sprayed.  I also practiced a little before diving in on spraying the engine.

Unfortunately the repair is still just paint rather than what should be far more rugged powder coat. Hope it holds up well. But it's still not a comparble to new repair.

I touched up a few spots on my granite.    The paint is actually a really good match.   I'm really pleased with the results.. Only small little touch ups tho..  But that is an expensive can of spray paint.

Dave.    Get it from harley.  Matches perfectly.

Shouldnt be fixed by the dealer if is on guarantee? if we have to repair it makes no sense since our CVO are suppose to be the premium of all Harley's....just saying.....

I didn't have any engine powder coating come off until the bike was out of warranty.  However, the Harley "warranty repair" for this issue was for the HD shop the sand the area and touch up with the spray paint.  Some owners got the MoCo to spring for new engine cases, but that was probably those that had a failure early on.  As the problem became more widespread, I'm sure HD realized they couldn't keep replacing engine cases and came up with this as a cheap repair.  Sort of like those that had problems with their seats and the Harley warranty fix was to give you a black Sharpie to color the seat.

once is out of warranty there is no choice but to fix it ourselves....by the way you did a great job at it....I had the same problem and it was fix by the dealer, but the piece wasn't replaced...but I am happy with the result....

Considering the cost of the bikes you'd think the powder coat on the engines (if it's actually powder coating, I'm not sure as it certainly does damage easy) would be more durable and resist chemicals like brake cleaner or carb cleaner. I had to touch up mine after using some industrial strength degreaser while doing some engine work.

Can't agree that I'd ask it to withstand all types of industrial solvents.  Some of those we want to remove things like powder coating.  But against day to day road use and things like brake cleaner that is quickly used to clean.  Too often it seems it doesn't (anymore).  Especially so with the granite color. 

I can even understand why the MoCo won't replace an engine for a hunk of powder coat.  It's a bitch when it happens as it can be a significant cosmetic mistake.  But I'd not expect an automaker to replace an engine for bad paint on an engine block.   Too bad Mother Harley can't make the stuff just a bit thicker/better applied/whatever-the-problem-is to begin with and just avoid 99.5% of this problem.  Oh, wait, this is the MoCo we're talking about.  Never mind.

The engine powder coating problem was a manufacturing default (in several model yrs - 09 and 10 I believe) and not the result of solvents or cleaners used.  I baby my CVO and can assure you noting too harsh was used on the engine.  I agree an automotive manufacturer wouldn't replace an engine block if the coating flaked off, but a motorcycle is different.  The engine on a car isn't part of the vehicle's beauty and doesn't show.
