Trailering with a Jeep?

Not sure this is the right place, but going to post my question.

Dilemma:  the lovely wife wants me buy a new vehicle, time, she says, to surrender my 2001 F150 4x4 with 180K on it, not to be trusted with a long drive trailer my 03 SERK and her 75 Naked Wing.  I have a 7x12 Haulmark dual axle trailer.  Rather than letting me buy a 2014 CVO, she wants a 2014 Jeep Rubicon . . . Only made in a six cylinder.

Question:  will a six cylinder Ribicon safely trailer a 7x12 enclosed, dual axle trailer?  I know it will pull it up the mountains we frequently travel through, but will it safely stop?  She is dead set on a Rubicon, but I have never pulled a trailer with a six cylinder Wrangler series Jeep.  There is no 8 cylinder option on any of the new Wrangler series Jeeps and she is dead set against a pre-owned, and only likes the Rubicon (Wrangler) models.

Anybody have experience trailering an enclosed tandem with one of those?

If your main concern is braking does your trailer have brakes? I would think w/tandem axles it would. :nixweiss:

She plans on off-roading? The Ruby gets you a couple stickers, lockers, and off-road tires.

There's rumors of a diesel in the near future.

Yes, the trailer has brakes . . . Not sure how that works.  Have been pulling behind the F150 with no trouble, without having ever installed the trailer brake control in the pickup.  Also, I have never changed the battery in the box on the trailer frame.  I bought the trailer used a few years ago . . . It is a 1998 trailer, so the brake battery is long dead.

I am not sure quite sure if the brakes are working while trailering, or if they work somehow just when plugged in after hone ting the round electrical plug of the trailer into the truck connector.

I know this all sound pretty stupid . . . Other than checking out the tires and axle bearings, I have simply plugged it up and rolled without an education of trailers with brakes.

I appreciate you getting back to me.  This is a learning curve I have not encountered before.

Yeah, I would like to wait . . . but she never asks for much, so I am wanting to accommodate her soon . . . She loves the Rubicon after last Thursday's the test drive, jacked some with the off road tires.

We have never taken a real vacation.  I think she wants to go from Atlanta, catch Route 66 at St. Louis, head west to CA and then north to do the Rubicon trail . . . Trailer in the 03 SERK for side adventures.  I just need to know if the Rubicon with stop the enclosed 7x12 dual axle trailer behind me going down the Smokies!

She is a pretty incredible lady . . . took care of me 24/7 after I got crushed by a kid on a cell while riding my Fatboy in a city side street.  Spent 1 1/2 years as a talking head in a wheelchair while she took care of me through 11 surgeries to make me ambulatory again.  

Two days out of the wheelchair, I could not hardly walk more or less ride) she let me replace the Fatboy with an 03 SERK . . .

A Ribicon for that?  Feels like small change in return for what she did for me.

She deserves whatever she wants to drive!

I have a Grande Cherokee....does not have the off-road prowess of a Ruby.....but tows up to 7000#...and stops it well too.

Those are a couple of things that you might want to do if you decide to "keep Momma happy". ;) I would also suggest if there is an option for a "trailer" package w/this vehicle you get that too... this might include a tow/haul option for the transmission along w/a transmission (fluid) cooler that might be beneficial. Also that package may come pre-wired for the trailer brake option.

The rubicon comes with a toe package! but not wired for a trailer brake option! from what I understand.

The Grande Cherokee is much different than the Wrangler (e.g. rubicon) series.  I know an 8 cylinder Grande Cherokee will do it ... But she does not like the SUV style . . .

Any body pulling enclosed large trailer with a Rubicon or anything in the Four door Wrangler series?

I believe the Rubi can only tow 3500lbs, and that will be what your trailer weighs without the bike(s).  For this reason I went with the Toyota FJ Cruiser which can tow 5000lbs.  The FJ still struggles in hills/mountains, but it does the job towing my trailer and two bikes.

My wife has a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited w/3.8 V6 with factory towing package. We have pulled our single axle 6x10 trailer with the SERG on board, with out problems and no trailer brakes. (Would be nice to have.)
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with med towing package is 3500 pounds

Just take the top and doors off the Rubicon. It's just like riding a bike. The wheelbase on a jeep is to short to tow for any distance.

Just sayin the Rubicon trail isn't a piece of cake. But if you go with a group there will be help. I have an 05 Rubicon and I love mine. The newer ones are much different.

The jeep will pull it..50-55 mph fine. 70-80 on the interstate it will dog it to death. I pulled my 7x14 haulmark with two bikes behind a 1/2 ton pickup with a small v-8 and it drove me nuts. If you aren't careful it could be like the tail wagging the dog. The brakes can work with any vehicle. If it doesn't have the connections like a tow package, a $100 upgrade can be added. The battery you refer to is to apply trailer brakes in case it comes disconnected.

Well, she is pretty dead set on a 2014, 4 door Rubicon with two package, modest jack up and bigger tires.

So, it looks like most probably then, that my 7x12 enclosed Haulmark with tandem axle and brakes set up for two cruisers just will not work safely, if I am reading things right, even trailering only one SERK in the trailer, even though the Rubicon is rated for 3500 lbs.  Correct?

Busted . . . so, would also have to buy a smaller single axle trailer to tow one bike behind the Rubicon . . . right?
