Poor sounding 2014 CVO pipes
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:22:47 PM »

Hi everyone, last week I purchased a 2014 Softail deluxe CVO.First modification that I would like to do is to get this bike to sound better. I like the stock look but I'm open to other ideas. Also if it's a good bang for my buck, I'm open for a full system instead of just Slip-ons. A nice sound but not obnoxious. Also some rough numbers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Steve.

Cost effective you say?

Take your stock header off and cut out a patch panel on the "outside" of the area where the two pipes come together where your Cat Converter is. Then take a hammer and a chisel and spend about 20 minutes removing the Cat. Then take the header and the patch panel to your local muffler shop and have them weld it back in. About $30!

All of this will be hidden behind the stock chrome covers.

From there you have a Zillion options of slip-Ons to meet your sound tastes and budgets.

Or you can spend $300 and buy a Fulsac or FuelMoto header. I'm sure these things are great once you spend another $5,000 building your motor but for a stock 110" even with cams for day to day street riding you can't beat this Cost Effective option.

I run the de-catted stock header with Vance & Hines Hi-Output Slip-Ons. Love this setup up and saved myself $300!

WillyB, The softails do not have the catalytic converter like the dressers do...  As least my CVO Deluxe didn't.

Steve48, I just put Rush slip ons on the wifes CVO Deluxe and it sounds great....  FWIW,  FLH91

Hi first mod is going to be a Vansen Hines pro-pipe complete exhaust system. Couple questions some people are saying that if I go with a complete system I need to buy a power commander or something like that so I can remap the bike. Some are  saying you don't need to map at all. I will buy power commander if necessary but this is about the only modification that I will do. My bike is a 2014 Softail deluxe cvo. Thank you for your input

Congrats on the new ride; great choice!  If you went with/are going with a complete pipe system, you will likely want/need a tuner.  The factory module is capable of making minor compensations (typically no problem for something like changing the slip on's)  but switching out the entire pipe will likely go beyond the stock ECM's reach.  You mentioned Power Commander, which you really can't go wring with.  This site will likely steer you to two excellent sources (Full Sac, and Fuel Moto).  You can get a tuner from them pre mapped with your exact setup to really simplify things - I don't recall which brand of tuner they sell, but both vendors are extremely reputable and happy to talk with you on the phone.  Basic costs that I found during this process:  pipes $400, slip on's $400,tuner $300.  Round numbers, you can spend a lot more than this or a few hundred less...hope this helps and good luck!

If you like the looks of the stock system and cost is a factor then look at a set of slip-on mufflers to replace yours as it will vary the sound a lot on a Softail. Then get a tuner to tune the ECM for the changes and it's going to be your best bang for the buck. I would recommend the TTS Mastertune but then I'm a little biased.

Maybe give Steve @ Fullsac a call? It seems he may be able to take care of you.

I know that his baffles and pipe for the touring bikes are great products, so is the TTS tuner   :2vrolijk_21:-- all of which I use on my bike

I think Steve only makes pipes for the Touring bikes. There's nothing on the Fullsac site about anything other than the Touring bikes. Maybe this would be a new market opportunity for him though!

FWIW, I am a TTS fan, too...  :2vrolijk_21:

Agree, just start over with whole new pipes, you will be happier in the long run.
