Heads or Jugs ?
« on: November 02, 2006, 08:47:21 PM »

Some of you may recall me mentioning my neighbor Cappy and his 06 88" Pearl Black "Felix". He and I were talking yesterday and he said to me " I want to bump up my motor a bit, but I've only got a limited amount of money. What would give me the most for my money. Perfomance heads and cams or bigger jugs and cams ? " I told him I thought it depended on what he wants. In my view, heads and cams would give him more horsepower and jugs and cams would give him more torque. So I'm posting this thread to see what you folks out there think. Basically he's talking $1,500 to spend including labor.

B, my take is: there no replacement for displacement.  I'd make it a 95", but don't forget he'll need pistons, too.

Big B,

Possibly both.  First, rather than buy new jugs he can just have his existing jugs bored to the correct oversize.  The 95" cylinders H-D sells are just overbored 88" cylinders, nothing special about them.  Buy a new set of 95" pistons and have the cylinders bored and honed to size, this should save a few bucks off the H-D kit price.  And since the stock TC88 heads actually flow less than the old EVO heads, despite the larger displacement engine, there are some good gains to be had with just minor porting work and oversized intake valves.  New Hi-Po heads aren't really necessary (and would bust the budget anyway).

Well, you didn't state the obvious, so I thought I would. ;D

I'm just wondering if jugs/pistons/cams + labor = heads/cams + labor, cost-wise.

Jerry,
        Dave Mackey offers just what you're talking about and includes a set of his DM cams. Problem is, his price is $1,800 for the complete redo. If there was someone as good cheaper, it'd be a great deal

Whoa!  What's changed?  Look at this chart from the 2006 SE Pro catalog for the 1550 Stage II compared to what Jerry just posted.  Is that the muffs???

I think it is the SE muffs, Brian...before I put the deposit down on the SE back in April, I had researched and studied getting a Street Glide and doing exactly this mod...the price I was being quoted at the time was around 1500 installed, not counting the SE muffs, so the whole deal would have been closer to 2K.  Not bad for that kind of increase in HP/TQ, IMO.

Brian;
I assume that he has a good exhaust and AC?

For $1,500 I would do cams, first. An andrews 37G or S&S 510G works very well in a stock 88. Also a PCIII or RT with labor you'd be right there.
