National Parks opening under state authority...
« on: October 11, 2013, 10:20:52 AM »

Just read on the RV forums that the National Parks in Utah (Bryce, Zion, Arches, etc.) are opening today under state authority.

I'm sure that NPs in other states will follow soon.....those states where the tourist $ braces up their state economy.

Not Florida, and it is a tourist driven economy.  Our Republican Governor says no way.  Here's the text:

Florida officials say they won't use state money to help reopen Everglades National Park and other national parks located in the Sunshine State.

The administration of President Barack Obama said Thursday it will allow some parks closed due to the federal government shutdown to reopen as long as states cover the costs.

But a spokesman for Gov. Rick Scott said Florida has no intention of spending state money.

Frank Collins said it was the obligation of the federal government to reopen the parks and that "Florida taxpayers will not foot the bill to cover Washington's failure to negotiate and compromise."

Florida is home to several national parks, as well as national seashores and national monuments such as the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine.

Hope so...

Watched the news yesterday and a runner was ticketed $100 for running in a closed park. Really, that's petty. Though closed is closed......

Two 50ish year old Orange County (CA) women each got a $250 ticket..plus $20 processing fee..for trespassing into The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area located ~ 15 miles from Las Vegas.  The article said they "..encountered an enraged ranger from the Bureau of Land Management.."  There were two park rangers and one of them "puffs up and says 'What are you doing here?'  He was very mean and aggressive".  What the h#ll were BLM rangers doing on-site anyway if they were furloughed?

It could have been worse; the women could have been dragged out of their Range Rover and beaten.  Get a grip, people.

How is it the government does not have money for Park Rangers but has money for armed guards!
