Ran out of fuel yesterday.
« on: October 11, 2013, 11:25:19 AM »

Ok, go for a nice ride around Corpus Christi yesterday. Was getting late and the fuel range reading showed 85 miles. Figured I would head home and get fuel later this week. I make it to the home gate and the bike dies. The fuel range shows 72 miles and the reserve light is not on. Completely empty. 2013 Road King CVO. Before I take it in, is this a common problem?

Doesn't matter if it's common or not, it's still a defect and Harley is obligated to fix it under the terms of the warranty.

I hear ya, but the reason Harley gets away with blowing this stuff off can be laid directly on the customers who grab their ankles and let the MoCo do it to them.  Running out of fuel when the gauge still shows plenty available can easily be classified a safety related defect, just like stalling for any other reason.  It has been the reason for actual safety recalls in the automotive arena, and it would be for Harley as well if enough people would stop tolerating it and raise holy hell.  It continues to amaze me how the same people who wouldn't tolerate this sort of crap on a $15k-$20k car will blindly accept it on a $30k-$40k Harley.

I don't think this is common.  My reserve light came on during my last ride and my odometer showed something like 30 miles remaining when I got gas.

I've noticed a similar issue with both bikes I've owned.  The actual range is about 1/2 to 2/3 less than the range indicates, consistently.  If the "remaining range" says 80 miles, I now know I've got 30 miles left, tops.  Never been stranded, but damn close a couple times.

The odometer is the best gas gauge you've got on your bike.  I never go more than 200 miles anymore without filling up.

My miles remaining never comes on until 30. Then how accurate that is depends upon how I am riding at the time. On the interstate that number will drop fast! Like 2 miles off the remaining miles for every mile traveled.

I too use the trip meter and seldom push it beyond 175 miles.

Mine seemed accurate with the first tank of gas I went through.  I had 30 miles left showing when the bike had 203 miles on it.  Obviously, I'm still in my break-in phase and only on my second tank of gas so far (need more time to ride).   :'(

Gonna make an appointment in the morning. I'm on my 4th tank. All went well until my last tank. On the prior ones the reserve light came on at around 30 miles.

Keep us posted, Snapper.  At the very least, it can be something that I try to watch closely for down the road.  If it does happen then I'll know what has to be done to fix it.

Thanks,

My 07 doesn't have that miles to empty feature but the low fuel light has always been inconsistent so I just make sure to get fuel when the needle gets between empty and 1/4. I don't run full to empty. I never confirmed this but I was told years ago a fuel injected car truck or bike that you don't want to run close to empty all the time as it is hard on the fuel pump. Maybe someone wiser can tell me the truth.

I'm figuring for what I paid, that sucka better work without me having to keep an eye on miles traveled.

Funny that; old habits I guess.  Have filled based solely on miles traveled for so many years couldn't do it any other way even if I wanted to.  Before that with some small peanut tanks and bikes without much instrumentation had two methods, keep track of time and/or unscrew the cap and look down the hole when you think it might be time.  Only once did I ever lose a cap while moving....  ???

I still wouldn't rely completely on the fuel quantity gauge as be accurate.  I have seen million $$$$ aircraft that still have to have a wooden stick dipped into the tank to get an accurate measurement of fuel quantity.   The gauge should be good enough to warn you that you are close to empty but that last half gallon is still iffy.

Very true - there's no technology that's going to replace common sense.
