31 year veteran cut down by drunk this morning.

UNION, NJ -- A uniformed New York City firefighter riding his motorcycle to work was fatally struck by an apparent drunk driver in New Jersey early Friday.

The crash happened in the area of North Avenue and Vivian Terrace in Union Township around 5:15 a.m.

The 57-year-old victim, identified as John Monteverde of Whitestone, Queens, was apparently struck while the car was attempting to make a turn, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of vehicle was arrested and charged with DWI.

Union Police Lieutenant Robert Christie confirmed that the FDNY was assisting in the investigation.

Monterverde worked at Engine Company 159 in Dongan Hills.

FDNY Commisioner Salvatore Cassano released the following statement:
"The entire Department mourns the tragic loss of Firefighter John Monteverde, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. John selflessly served the city for more than 31 years during which he was cited four times for his bravery at fires and for his life-saving medical work as a member of Engine Company 22 in Manhattan. He also devoted countless hours working tirelessly at the World Trade Center site in the rescue and recovery effort following the September 11 terrorist attacks, which took the lives of nine of his fellow firefighters at Engine 22 and Ladder 13. Our hearts and prayers are with his family and all those who knew and loved him."

And they worry about me not wearing a helmet. ONE DAY they will make the punishment so severe as to clear the roads of these drunks. Sadly it was not in time for this brave Firefighter.

Killing someone while DWI should be treated the same as using a weapon to kill someone.  Make it a capital crime with capital punishment.  Might eliminate some of the "repeat" offenders as well as make it very clear what will happen.

1st time : $ 3k fine and one week in jail
2nd time: $ 6k fine and 3 to 6 month in jail plus driving licence will be hold for one year
Killing someone: 3 to 6 month jail until his trial

so sad to hear. especially for someone who risks his life daily for our safety. agree, it needs to be as though you shot someone. MURDER! is what it is. you willing drink & you willing get behind the wheel. some even fight to get behind the wheel. CONDOLENCES to family, friends & co-workers.

This is exactly the reason I quit drinking. I got a drunk driving in my truck in March 2012 and I could have been the guy that hit the biker I did it for years. I haven't had a drink in over 15 months and I never have to worry about it now but I do worry that someone will hit me
