Factory Air Cleaner on 07 SE Ultra
« on: November 03, 2006, 10:07:55 AM »

Hello fellow riders,

I am a new member and I would like to bring up the discussion on the stock air cleaner on the 07 SE Ultra again.  After calling the factory and holding on for forty minutes or so I was able to speak with a tech who told me that the 07 SE Ultra came with the high flo air filter just as all of the other SE bikes but that it was just shaped differently.  He said that I would gain nothing by going the Stage 1 route when my bike arrives.  Is this not just the opposite from what I have been reading in your discussions?

Thanks,

The 07's do not have a stage 1 (open element) air cleaner. They have the closed back and what HD calls a "free flowing" filter element.

That explains where he came up with Free Flow.  What is the difference in air intake?  Moderate or tremendous?

Thanks,

The limiting factor is the airbox. The closed backing plate that comes from the factory has a limited amount of air that can get into the airbox. When you remove the backplate you eliminate the airbox which allows for much less restrictive airflow into the engine.

The 07 SERK does have the SE backing plate for sure.  The element is not high flow.  With the clugey way that they had to add a spacer to the inside of the chrome cover to clear the breather stand offs, you can see the filter from the side.
The Thunder mountain bikes use the same backing plate and notch the HD billet air cleaner cover for clearance.

Since I am not a high RPM person, I think that I will leave the stock AC and just change the mufflers to SE Performance for a good sound that is within my 55 plus neighborhood limits of tolerance.

Someone posted once, and it was also in American Rider magazine, the amount of air flow in CFM for the stock, S/E and various aftermarket air cleaners. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd search for the post. But, what I remember from reading the magazine, the S/E was right on the threshold for what amount of air flow a stock 103" needs. I imagine a 110" would need even more. All of the tested aftermarket designs outflow the S/E. You can't beat this modification for improved performance and rideability. There is no downside .

kazumdgc,

You hit on the only important part of the entire debate - you are happy with how your bike runs.

Some guys are chasing a number.  Like some guys chase the top dollar in life, even if they will never be able to spend it.  Its just a scorecard.

Its just the way some of us are.  Others get what they want and are satisfied.  Nothing wrong with either approach, and neither side can change it, its just how we are.

 [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]And its ALL GOOD!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
