noise from front of engine
« on: October 14, 2013, 01:26:29 PM »

I have a noise coming from what sounds to be the front of the engine. First heard it and thought heat shield had come loose, when I got home and let the bike cool down could not find anything that could vibrate and make noise. Could not replicate it in nuetral, rode a bit no noise. Went for a ride yesterday and it is back. This is a very noticable loud tick tick that seems to occur between 2700 and 3000 rpm I can not hear it over or under this range. Any one have a good guess as to what would cause this.

That's gonna cost ya!! Welcome to the 110 Valve Train noise. Start with the lifter, then check out the valve guide's, then piston slap, crank run out. And on and on and on.

If your going to check it over yourself......start in the cam chest area as that is where it seems to be the bulk of the issues stem from.

Once in the cam chest, replace the cam bearings and lifters no matter what...   :2vrolijk_21:

My bet is on piston slap.

2011 cvo road glide 20000 miles. Dont think it is pistons as is not hitting that hard as you can feel it. Just tic or tac

I hope its not piston slap, but my piston slap wasn't all that loud yet it was there, I guess when/if you take a look at those piston skirts and how round or out of round the cylinders are you will know for sure whether it was a culprit or not.  Your noise is pretty much the exact same rpm range as mine and that is when you could hear it.   Mine went away when we bored the cylinders .010 over and put in the "Mahle"  screaming eagle 10.5 to 1 pistons.

Good luck in whatever is and getting it cleared up.

For the sake of being thorough you could make sure you don't have anything loose in the rocker boxes and that nothing is even slightly hitting inside those are easy to get at bolts.  To be sure you have enough clearance around each spring you could take a zip tie and put it around the base and see if your too close anywhere.   Would also check that your flange bolts are tight on the exhaust, and that your timing cover bolts are in tight, things like this can make you think other things are wrong.   Have you checked all your head shield clamps ?

Checked all heat shield clamps, exhaust bolts, fenders, lights, various bolts, and even the rider for loose screws and have not found anything yet.

I wouldn't rip the top off the engine down just yet, by being led to believe that the sky is falling.
Methodically start in the cam chest, take your time and check things over, and as mentioned replace the lifters(and the OE cam bearings) with high quality items such as Sonnax bearings, and S&S lifters. :2vrolijk_21:

FWIW, my money is on valvetrain - lifters specifically. Mine went at less than 10k miles on my 11.5, unfortunately when they go they take out everything else in the cam chest with them.........maybe even more than that.

Do you have an ESP? if so take it in for the noise and have them deal with it.

I know it's sometimes a big IF but, if your dealer is any good they will be familiar with the issue

No esp, will try the dealer if I feel like I am over my head but have little confidence in them. Have got some great info here today as what to look for. Not a twin cam mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but will peek into the cam chest this weekend.

If you have good basic mechanical skills, basic tools (and a torque wrench) and a service manual, the cam chest is pretty mechanically straight forward.  A couple of specialty tools required, but are available fairly inexpensive at a number of sources...   :2vrolijk_21:
