Anybody rode to Alaska
« on: October 14, 2013, 05:11:55 PM »

Talked to a guy this week end that has ridden to Alaska nine times from Wilmington NC. He rides a BMW. Got my gears turning!! I have ridden almost all of the lower 48 and thinking about adding this to my bucket list. Anyone done this ride on their Harley?

We went last year from Dallas, to Missoula, to Banff, to Stewart BC, Hyder mile mark 0, then ferry to Ketchican, (lower passage, but still Alaska) rode up and down there , then ferry to Bellingham, WA (like 40 some hours), Oregon coastal, Cali, cut across AMAZING road 299 I think Humboldt to Redding, Eli,NV, Durango, Dallas.  Got it all captured on Garmin Route.  Woulda been OK to go up in to Alaska on a BMW GS, but I don't think that great on an Electra Glide.  :)

I have not. But many, many years ago my friends Dad and a couple of his buddies road from St. Louis to Fairbanks and back. I remember him telling stories about a very long gravel road etc and just how much fun they had. I think they took a month.

Since that time, over 35 years ago, it's been on my to do list.  :2vrolijk_21:

Not on my Harley but on my KLR 650.  I know I would not ride mine there but that does not mean it cannot or should not be performed.

Haven't done it either. I lived in Fairbanks for almost a dozen years and I have driven the ALCAN in a number of other vehicles and it is on my bucket list. I came very close to not buying my CVO because of this very trip. I am not sure of the number of times I have driven it, but there is always a few hundred miles of gravel because of construction. They use lots of Calcium Chloride and makes a hell of mess when watered to keep the dust down. I wouldn't recommend taking a CVO on the trip, but as my wife said "just rent one and ride that". The Ferry is a good option for riding one way or the other, make sure to look at least a year out to get on it, they fill up fast.

On my bucket list but I will be on my BMW R1200 GS. I live on a short gravel road and hate riding my CVO on it, especially when it's either real dry or wet like it is a lot in AK, can't imagine riding it on gravel for hundreds of miles. Wouldn't a SEUC look odd with knobby tires?

I am planning a Pacific coast ride in 2014 from NC. Always take a couple of weeks and do at least one big trip. Thinking ahead on doing the Alaska trip the following year. I ride a 2011 CVO Roadglide and just not sure weather to ride it or start looking for possibly a GS or maybe even a Triumph Tiger to make this ride. I have always been a Harley guy through and through but the CVO is too nice a bike to mees up.
